    Would it actually be ok for NZF to get in again? It could be such a chaotic, unstable, bickering govt with NZF, NAT, ACT that it would collapse and relegate them to opp for ages.

      There would be Schadenfreude and popcorn, but the price would be much too high. It would not be OK at all. As always, the only smart vote is for the party we support, whoever that may be. Playing tactical games won't work (see 2008, when some leftish voters talked about keeping NZF above 5% to save Clark).

      Anyway, the point about tonight's poll, and all the coming ones, is not the numbers per se but the narrative. The media are toddlers who need to be entertained, and if they decide Winston is "in" then the focus switches from Hipkins to Luxon floundering and failing to answer the inevitable question. Good.

      Most of the Policy put through in the 2017 Coalition Government was NZF Policy.

      You think? I reckon National needing both ACT and NZF to form a government would be far more entertaining. In those circumstances Winston would probably drive Luxon to a mental breakdown of some sort in negotiations and give any TV interviewer who asks about it a sly wink. I have to admit that although I don't support NZF, I do actually quite enjoy watching Winston beat up on political lightweights every now and then.

      It's revealing that you now want to talk about polls instead of National's "fantastic tax plan", as you did before. It turns out it is literally "fantastic", in the original sense.

      The election campaign, in summary:

      Nats: "Hey voters, would you like some free money, without borrowing or cutting or taxing you?"

      Voters: "Of course we would! Who wouldn't?"

      People who read the small print, like economists and lawyers: "Er, hang on, that won't work …"

      Nats: "Sshhh, we just need to keep the con going for a few more weeks!"

      (Yes, the con might win. They are running down the clock. But history tells us what happens when the people discover they've been defrauded. It gets very ugly, fast. Fisiani will be tumbleweed, of course).

      • National: 39 percent, up 2 points (49 seats, up 1)
      • Labour: 28 percent, down 1 points (35 seats, down 2)
      • Greens: 10 percent, down 2 points (13 seats, down 2)
      • ACT: 10 percent, down 3 points (13 seats, down 4)
      • NZ First: 5 percent, up 1 points (7 seats, up 7)
      • Te Pāti Māori: 3 percent, steady (3 seats, steady).

      It confirms Labour is in the midst of a dead cat bounce.

      It is up – bit by bit. 24% (Roy Morgan) 26% (Post Freshwater) 26.8% (Newshub Reid) and now 28% in the One News Verian poll.

      And ACT'S continuing decline is now at a greater rate than National's gain.

      On these trends, Labour is above 30% and NACT loses the ability to govern without NZF.

    Northland MP Willow-Jean Prime walked into the lion's den when she took part in an election debate in Kerikeri on Tuesday night.

    For Prime it was a foray into hostile territory with the Labour MP all but drowned out by shouts and jeers.

    She had little chance to defend her party's record or set out her priorities above the din.

    The loudest reaction came after mention of the C word – that's Covid, of course.

    Prime defended the government's response, saying it was one of the best in the world and had saved lives, but acknowledged some in the room did not agree with her.

    David Seymour's thinking out loud about a confidence arrangement, without supply, appears to be shrinking confidence in ACT at the same time as the number of names supplied on the ACT list gets smaller and smaller.

    I think their peak was 18%, it's now 10% and might be still falling.

    National's tax cut is popular with voters.

    The half fares (targeted) and GST changes (small scale) do not compete.

    While Labour rejected the wealth tax option, it should consider matching the IETC change made by National. Cost $700M

    It can do so and still criticise the National plan – as it would increase the deficit (poor costings leaving a gap) and create an inflationary stimulous as funding came from foreign buyers (over-estimate of $700M – more likely less than $500M on average year by year).

    The obvious way is to place a 5% stamp duty on homes valued over $2m (local buyers only). As the funding came from locals there would be no inflationary stimulous.

    At 3000 sales pa or more, one might only expect around $450M each and every year.

    The highest rate in some Oz states for residents/citizens (they have foreign buyer rates of 7-8%).

    Banks made $7B in profits in the past year – a tax change from 28% to 33% would raise $350M

      Currently, non-citizens are not allowed to buy residential property in New Zealand after the Labour-led government introduced a ban on foreign buyers.

      National has argued the ban should be lifted, and instead, foreign buyers would pay a 15% tax on house purchases over $2 million.

      The poll asked about 1002 eligible voters: "Do you support or oppose foreigners being allowed to buy existing homes in New Zealand that are worth more than $2 million?"

      Of those polled, 39% supported National's plan while 46% opposed it.

    2. proffers a face saving narrative for the ACT slide in the polls, since Seymour's hubris over confidence without supply arrangments.

    It comes as the campaign season nears the end of a busy first week. Act has remained steady in the polls, only dropping a few points in the most recent Newshub and 1News polls.

    An interesting SMH item on Stuff, after their poor wee landlord series.

    An Oz property developer refutes that immigration is worsening the housing crisis and wants higher unemployment to subjugate employees to employers

    “We absolutely have to have immigration,” he said. “Australia doesn’t work without immigration and if we’re not growing, we’re dead.”

    The dynamic between employers and employees had to change through a 40 to 50% jump in unemployment, Gurner said. “We need to see pain in the economy. We need to remind people that they work for the employer, not the other way around.

    He then claims the right planning rules facilitate faster development and claims stamp duty (from 1 to 5% and taxes are the reason for high property prices.

    Gurner, … also said incentives needed to be realigned. "It just comes back to stamp duty taxes,” he said. “When you look at the percentage of taxes across a property, it’s over 50 per cent. People say, ‘Why is housing so expensive?’ Well, 50 per cent plus is taken up in stamp duty and taxes

      He fronted the money. The boss did. Golly it must be nice to have an employer who doesn’t think you’re a lazy arsehole, but rather reaches into their pocket to help out a young fella.

            He cracked me up once when I saw him on some tv show and I think the context was its not easy to get started out in business and you have to tough it out etc. Then he went on to say when he started out he took out a small loan of a million dollars from his parents…… hehehe a small loan of a measly million, how out of touch with the real world is that!

            I'm not a raving anti Trumper like some seem to be. I'm not pro him either, I just think he's a dickhead. And amazingly he's not the worst nor the most corrupt (but probably the most egotistical) USA President there's ever been, which says a lot about the quality of some of them.

            To be honest I dislike all politicians nowadays. Could just be cynicism that comes with age…..or wisdom that comes with experience.
