"But let there be no doubt, right now whenever sheep and beef farms come onto the market, then both the purchaser and the underbidder are typically ‘thinking forestry’. They can easily outbid those who have a sheep and beef perspective"

It appears there has been something of a lack of thought re this policy…..a common theme re CC policy.

    • Ad 1.1

      Everyone's a winner baby that's no lie

      • pat 1.1.1

Everyone?….offshore investors maybe, NZ not so much.

        • bwaghorn 1.1.1.1

Yip we will kill off rural nz once and for all, the profits will all leave the country , and emissions will keep climbing.

But hell nob ends can tell them self they are carbon neutral and that's all that matters.

          Who's selling?

        • Ad 1.1.1.3

Local owners get tonnes of cash they want for different investments, fewer cows, more wood for housing, global carbon trade system strengthened. Looks pretty good.

          • bwaghorn 1.1.1.3.1

Got any marino in the flash tramping gear of yours?

So, a silent forest of exotics, kept "predator free" by the indiscriminate use of poison, destroying the local hydrology and swept by increasingly frequent forest fires accelerated by AGW. But tax positive! Yippee!

            • Ad 1.1.1.3.2.1

You cite one article nearly 20 years old to try and claim that converting to forest is bad for hydrology. Dairy is worse for the land and the rivers and lakes than forestry. That's true of every catchment in New Zealand now, and it's why the government is having to re-regulate the entire water quality system of New Zealand.

Forestry is a whole bunch better for the environment in water use, water damage, and air pollution. And yes it will make money. Lots of it. Over multiple generations.

Fewer cows and more timber for housing?…you are an exemplar of the lack of understanding…it will not be dairy land that is repurposed and nor will it provide additional milling timber.

It will however reduce export dollars and leak NZD to offshore investors (without limit)

It has been interesting watching the reaction by the media and the public to the deaths of three young children, Liane, Maya, and Karla Dickason.

There has been a big effort to try to explain why this happened, and always with the "Where to get help" mental health service numbers at the end. It's framed as a tragedy rather than the crime.

I can't help wondering what the stories would be like if this were an underprivileged Maori or Pacific family who had lived in New Zealand all their lives, instead of a privileged immigrant white South African family.

Muttonbird I think there was a case of a Pasifica women who was house minding and left her car running in the garage and she and her children were found dead (accidental poisoning). I think people were very sympathetic and sad about this.

Peebles ? (daughter of World designers) wrote an appalling column in the Herald about this tradegy and I think lost her job or was stood down.

I must admit I think it would be different if it was a man who had murdered his three children. Most people assume because it was a woman killing her three children, that she was mentally ill. That is of course the most likely scenario.

    • Muttonbird 3.1

I think it's about lost privilege myself. Nothing to do with mental illness, although I'm sure that will be the eventual protection.

you sad fuck, how the fuck would you have any idea about the circumstances, I hope Jacinda is really proud of you.

        • left for dead 3.1.1.1

Alan !! which town/city are you in,just ask someone and they will point you to the nearest airport, and you fuck off.sarc

      • Gezza 3.1.2

That's a too much of a stretch for me, for you to be speculating on what really happened & what might have motivated the mother.

Better for you & all of us to wait &see what comes out after a full investigation & any subsequent trial.

Any deaths of children at the hands of a parent (or parent's partner) are appalling tragedies, no matter what the skin colour, culture, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status of the person who caused it.

    I feel for her family.

American anti-vaxxer dies 'suddenly and unexpectedly' after contracting COVID-19.

A California woman who reportedly described herself as "unmasked, unmuzzled, unvaccinated and unafraid" has died of COVID-19.

Kristen Lowery, 40, died a week ago after contracting the virus and developing pneumonia, leaving behind four children.

  5. Forget now 5

This is bleakly amusing to one who sees people claiming to believe that changing the name for something changes the thing itself (at most, jargon changes awareness rather than reality – a pot is not it's handle). Also retrying posting a youtube link to see if it works ok today for me.

I do really despise marketing, but at least they sometimes have the awareness that they are not in the business of selling useful objects to end users, but rather selling their glib nonsense to executives who require flattery. Executive management structures seem so inept at delivering anything to anyone except themselves. So what else is new?

WTF was that all about? Got about a minute into it before deciding to exit the bloody video. What a fracking weird & boring rant by that Mad-Hatted character. Time I'll never get back again. 😕

WTF was that all about? Sorry, Forget now. Got about a minute into it before deciding to exit the bloody video. What a fracking weird & boring rant by that Mad-Hatted character. Time I'll never get back again. 😕

      • Forget now 5.2.1

It was about 10 mins long; Gezza, the introvert was more for regular watches about why the topic was not as up to date as it could be (being pre-recorded for them to go out of town).

The topic was about games industry aggrandisement – now calling themselves; quadruple A rather than merely AAA, because Mainstream didn't fluff their egos enough. Important because of how huge an entertainment sector gaming now is (more than cinema even).
