For his listeners he would sound like “one of us.” A real bloke. Willing to have fun.
To me he is undignified and bringing his office into disrepute.

    • Ovid 1.1

It’s a fine line that politicians of all stripes must walk. In NZ, they can’t afford to be seen to be too precious or up themselves – witness Aaron Gilmore. If Key had prevaricated on answering those questions, I suspect he would have looked worse given that they were relatively trivial.

      • RJL 1.1.1

If he was acting like the PM he wouldn’t be on such a programme at all.

      • North 1.1.2

So was the subject of the interview…..The Trivial Mr Ponce Key. Informative too that no one would ever have dared to ask HC those wank questions……Old Muntersville Key was right there……lapping it up ! Devilish, selfish, Crosby Textor scripted cunning yes….. brains no ! Doesn’t say much for New Zealanders does it ?

    • Grindlebottom 1.2

For his listeners he would sound like “one of us.”

True. In this country, these days, this works. Since the arrival of Key we no longer expect our PM to maintain a dignified image, keep their word, or tell the truth. Imagine if it was Muldoon or Bolger or Shipley, or Clark or how it would go down in the US if it was Obama, Even when they have a useless president they all maintain some gravitas in office.

    • Mrs Brillo 1.3

And to women who clean the family shower, he sounds like a dirty selfish piece of work.

      • ankerawshark 1.3.1

        100+++ Mrs Brillo at 1.3

      • anom 1.3.2

Urine is maybe the least yukky thing to go down the shower plughole, thinking crusty bits of poo, toe jamb, or what lurks in ya belly button ?
Piss is sterile, it would pick up more crud as it ran down ya leg or the shower wall )

    • whateva next? 1.4

not exactly a “statesman” and have never understood why so many think being one of the “blokes” qualifies him to govern the country, which clearly it doesn’t!

      • les 1.4.1

        what does though?

        • Whateva next? 1.4.1.1

Integrity, history of contributing and caring about social cohesion. Being interested in more than money and consumerism…..I could go on.
For the record, Andrew Little fits the bill very nicely thanks

  2. Ffloyd 2

Every he-man who pees in the shower, doesn’t trim his pubes, and only *feeds the chickens* while he is with his wife will now undoubtedly vote for this sad prat.
    God save us!

Why did they not ask him if he had ever lied to the country? Or anybody? Or everybody?

Because we ALL know the answer to that anyway maybe.

    • tiger Mountain 2.1

Lols to Oliver, on one level we are all human, even politicians, but that does not mean political affairs should be wrangled into a “life like experience” or never ending reality TV episode which is where this Key “on the munt” style idiocy leads

Key uses a burner phone for goodness sake, does he take nothing seriously?–of course he does, transferring the nation’s wealth “upstairs”–by the shovel load and the overnight digital transfer load, the John Key some aspirational New Zealanders relate to is shafting them as they chuckle

  3. Rodel 3

How low can radio go? JK makes me so proud.

    • ianmac 3.1

Of course Key had agreed to the interview. His choice and I think he already knew what the questions were going to be. Note his glancing down at his notes?
Except for the last question. Unscripted.

  4. maui 4

Good to see overseas tv can take the piss out of him. Our state Kim John channels are obviously very protectionist.

  5. Atiawa 5

He just lost the catholic vote.

  6. infused 6

and this is what screws the left. you probably can’t work that out though… (pre-empting the replies)

    • Gangnam Style 6.1

The rest of the world are laughing at John Key, not with him. I am not sorry for having higher standards, of leaders & humour for that matter. John Key will go down in history as a wanker.

  7. tracey 7

And now the Pm is spinning it to make it seem like now people don’t like him being honest….

Anyone really believe he went on the show not having any warning about the questions? I don’t think any NZ PM has done that for a few decades now, let alone a guy who has shown a tendency to blow it when speaking off the cuff.

    • infused 7.1

He’s trolling you all… hook, line, sinker.

This is so easy to see. What is wrong with you lot?

      Baited so easily.

      • tracey 7.1.1

You reckon he knew the questions beforehand infused?

      • McFlock 7.1.2

        Baited so easily.

There’s the fish keen to bite and there’s the fisher adept at choosing and placing the bait.

Maybe he’s just a master at it. After all, he refused to say.

  8. Nick 8

NZ Politics has become Shortland St…….just sad

    • One Anonymous Bloke 9.1

I’m not sure. She says Key has raised the bar for being a political Jekyll & Hyde, and exploits public cynicism.

She also describes his tactical relationship with truth.

    • Ffloyd 9.2

@Grindelbottom. I don’t know anyone who !horses around pulling waitresses ponytail’s! That wasn’t horsing around Tracy Watkins. That was common assault, perpetrated MANY TIMES on an unprotected female in her place of work! He is not one of us. He is a bully, and a coward who hides behind his position. If that had been Andrew Little doing that, or making a complete arse of himself on radio you would be running it in derisive, derogatory headlines for weeks and weeks. I feel sorry for you. Get out in the real world and do your job properly. There is more going on in NZ than our excruciatingly embarrassing pm making NZ look as stupid as he is, who apparently needs to be propped up by a press puppet by having him written about in positive glowing terms no matter how juvenile he gets.

  9. Trey 10

Paula Bennet had already been on the show and had been asked the same questions so John Key would definately have known what would be asked

  10. JanM 11

    Priceless!

  11. ropata 12

    Politics is dead.
NZ has become a joke country.
Welcome to our reality TV idiocracy.

  12. North 13

Even Oliver does not seem to understand that NZ has a child for a prime minister. A boy terribly spoilt (by the wannabes of the MSM) who still rocks himself with “Bum Bum Bum Bum !”

    What a fuk’n embarrassing idiot ! Judith’s onto it……

  13. Dorothy Bulling 14

This idiot has no sense of gravitas and totally demeans the post of Prime Minister of this country. By acting like he is one of the blokes, he demeans me in the eyes of the world. Our Prime Minister should always be a little above the rest of us. I am ashamed that Key represents me on the world stage. Time for him to go before any more damage is done to our reputation.

  14. Chrys Berryman 15

this tacky episode shows Keys real self….hes an anti intellectual, doesn’t know his countries history and seems to have stopped developing socially at age13…….

  15. ropata 16

Why indeed? Nothing the "smiling assassin" does is by accident, including embarrassing radio spots. Good blog TDB https://t.co/zS5sII1j3q— David Cunliffe (@DavidCunliffeMP) October 25, 2015
