National Breaches Crown Copyright

Tourism New Zealand has done a new video aimed at overseas investors that showcases The New Zealand Story. It is a lavish production, with sweeping helicopter footage galore and what sounds to me like a Tem Morrison voiceover. Here’s a version from YouTube:

There are only two problems with this video:

  1. Less importantly, there is the wooden, sort of bumbly guy at the start;
  2. More importantly, there is the fact that the National party thinks it can rip-off a Tourism New Zealand video wholesale, slap a clickable National logo in the corner, and call it National political propaganda on YouTube. Did Tem Morrison sign a release for his voice over to be used for the National party as well as for New Zealand investment and tourism? I bet he didn’t.

This is a government party trying to hijack a public service video for political ends. That stinks. John Key should pull this video, which likely breaches Tourism New Zealand’s Crown copyright over the work, off National’s partisan YouTube channel and leave the original The New Zealand Story on newzealand.com where it belongs.

      I have been trying to find a copy of that video (put out in 2008 and it breached Coldplay’s copyright by using the sound “clocks” for those whe were not around). Anyone still have the DVD?

    I wonder if David Cunliffe could use the video for his purposes and replace the National Logo with a Labour one?
    Just noticed that Mr Key stumbles over words with more than two syllables. eg au-di-ences, in-it-ti-tives, New-Zil-an-ders. Watch for them and give him a point for every or any word longer than 2 syllables that he might succeed in. Funny that?
    As for using the promo for National political purposes, what a chhek. (Thinks Dotcom cancelled birthday party.)

      I’ve long come to the conclusion that Key might actually have some type of speech impediment that he tries to hide. And considering that, I don’t really want to mock him for gaffes involving speaking because that’s just seems too mean-spirited.

        It’s probably been said before but I’ll add my two cents worth. When I met John Key in Sydney years ago he did not have (to my mind and memory at least) a particularly strong Kiwi accent at all.

    Key has contradicted himself and the National Party by associating themselves with so many edicts, morals and values that they actually specialise in attacking, undermining and dismantling.
    It’s funny how all the praise for New Zealand in this video such as it being pristine, clean, pure, and that people here have the values of freedom of opinion, integrity, flair, that business benefits ‘all New Zealanders’ with room to breathe (despite actively encouraging drilling for oil here), the country of open hearts (cold hearted National Party that stops workers and unions from being able to bargain collectively).
    The whole video bears no correlation to the New Zealand National Party whatsoever.

    Comedy gold. Love the victory photo in the background. He is very painful to watch when we all know that this is not the New Zealand he wants. The jerky head, the stilted speech, the shifty eyes shows that he has absolutely no belief in what he is saying. He wants dirty rivers, oil and gas drilling rigs, fracking for mines and any other destructive way he can use to make us an “economic rock star”. Oh, and the possibility of making our beautiful country one giant movie set, for the use of by hollywood lightweights. He is so evidently uncomfortable with this video.
    This video shows all the beauty of New Zealand and none of the poverty and misery brought about by this travesty of a government. Total hypocrite.

      Comedy gold indeed. The photo is a cracker, as is the vase of roughly arranged flowers. Their youtube channel seems to have five videos shot on the same day. There’s four changes of suit/tie/buttonhole for dear John (to give the impression of them being different events), but the same bedraggled flowers that appear in all the videos gives the game away.

            I’ve actually searched for the “courageous and most forgivable” line and the only results are NZ Conservative, No Minister, Kiwiblog and W****O**.

            Of course, the column in which Trotter allegedly said these things is from 2006, and our media suck at keeping things live for longer than a year, and the Sunday Star-Times is the worst offender for never putting things online at all. So they could all be telling the truth.

            But it doesn’t change the fact that burt’s sole piece of evidence for claiming that every Labour supporter on this blog has a double standard around National’s corruption is an eight-year-old column from someone who’s never written here.
