National Breaches Crown Copyright

Tourism New Zealand has done a new video aimed at overseas investors that showcases The New Zealand Story. It is a lavish production, with sweeping helicopter footage galore and what sounds to me like a Tem Morrison voiceover. Here’s a version from YouTube:

There are only two problems with this video:

  1. Less importantly, there is the wooden, sort of bumbly guy at the start;
  2. More importantly, there is the fact that the National party thinks it can rip-off a Tourism New Zealand video wholesale, slap a clickable National logo in the corner, and call it National political propaganda on YouTube. Did Tem Morrison sign a release for his voice over to be used for the National party as well as for New Zealand investment and tourism? I bet he didn’t.

This is a government party trying to hijack a public service video for political ends. That stinks. John Key should pull this video, which likely breaches Tourism New Zealand’s Crown copyright over the work, off National’s partisan YouTube channel and leave the original The New Zealand Story on newzealand.com where it belongs.

    Needs more Coldplay.

    • mickysavage 1.1

      Yep.

I have been trying to find a copy of that video (put out in 2008 and it breached Coldplay’s copyright by using the sound “clocks” for those whe were not around). Anyone still have the DVD?

  2. geoff 2

And the Roger Moore award goes to….

  3. Macro 3

    Typical…

People should wake up to the fact that the taxes they pay are solely for the benefit of National members no one else.

  4. Bill 4

And here was me thinking that it was only left wing cults that took stuff they didn’t produce or create to pass off as somehow theirs and reflective of them. Guess I was wrong.

  5. ianmac 5

I wonder if David Cunliffe could use the video for his purposes and replace the National Logo with a Labour one?
Just noticed that Mr Key stumbles over words with more than two syllables. eg au-di-ences, in-it-ti-tives, New-Zil-an-ders. Watch for them and give him a point for every or any word longer than 2 syllables that he might succeed in. Funny that?
As for using the promo for National political purposes, what a chhek. (Thinks Dotcom cancelled birthday party.)

    • Disraeli Gladstone 5.1

I’ve long come to the conclusion that Key might actually have some type of speech impediment that he tries to hide. And considering that, I don’t really want to mock him for gaffes involving speaking because that’s just seems too mean-spirited.

But we can still mock him over everything.

I’m looking at you three-way handshake.

      • Tim 5.1.1

I first thought that as well Dis. Trouble is – if you look at it in depth – it’s not consistent.
So genuine ‘impediment’ – I think not.

      • Mr Tank 5.1.2

It’s probably been said before but I’ll add my two cents worth. When I met John Key in Sydney years ago he did not have (to my mind and memory at least) a particularly strong Kiwi accent at all.

        • Anne 5.1.2.1

That sounds about right Mr Tank. Did he add a BBC plum or two after his stint in London? When he was returned to NZ by his overseas lords and masters to do their political bidding here, he thought it politic to resurrect his Kiwi accent?

          • xavier 5.1.2.1.1

On the 1987 Close Up feature on forex dealers (can be viewed on NZonscreen.com) he sounded quite posh before going overseas.

Investigation by a politically independent party such as the auditor general ?

Independent? you are kidding are you not

politically independent party such as the auditor general

“… where care for the land and people is genuine,” says Tem.

    Not under National, it’s not.

  8. thechangeling 8

Key has contradicted himself and the National Party by associating themselves with so many edicts, morals and values that they actually specialise in attacking, undermining and dismantling.
It’s funny how all the praise for New Zealand in this video such as it being pristine, clean, pure, and that people here have the values of freedom of opinion, integrity, flair, that business benefits ‘all New Zealanders’ with room to breathe (despite actively encouraging drilling for oil here), the country of open hearts (cold hearted National Party that stops workers and unions from being able to bargain collectively).
The whole video bears no correlation to the New Zealand National Party whatsoever.

  9. Tim 9

    “National Breaches Crown Copyright”
It does, but it’s more amusing AND serious than that.
National (and not only National) breaches any principle, law, legal construct/observance, or any other substantive societal understanding it considers inconvenient. National, National-Lite, ACT, I’m so gorgeous and wholesone Colon C, Hydney Rod, Gill Foff, Oik the Williams …..

    The fascists did likewise.

The more they do it ( not just here, but o’seas as well ) is a sign of fear and growing panic.
Masters of the Universe …. greed and avarice is good; winners and losers are Norman Normal – so encourage the smaller and smaller numbers of winners, and denigrate, stifle, suppress/kill the losers; kick the can down the road and keep kicking as hard and fast as you can; commodify all and everything that isn’t tied down as a means to ‘progress the agenda – going forward’; never show fear but be as arrogant as possible; …. it runs out eventually.
The saddest thing about it all is that the longer it runs, the more ‘violent’/disruptive/unhappy/destructive its reign will be

All pretty amusing really when its all so utterly self-defeating and suicidal.

  10. Chooky 10

the National Party and cronies have tried to hijack NZ…..the left and Greens just have to hijack it right back…

….maybe take the Nat version with logo …..and undercut it with reality images and voice-overs of what they have actually done …to the environment …..and how much they actually care …juxtapose and .lampoon their hypocrisy! ( of course this would ruin the original video…which could be the basis for a challenge to ban Nact from using it in the first place)

….it is the war of the images

    • framu 10.1

well it has a creative commons liscence and theres a “remix this video” button so go nuts i reckon

  11. floyd 11

Comedy gold. Love the victory photo in the background. He is very painful to watch when we all know that this is not the New Zealand he wants. The jerky head, the stilted speech, the shifty eyes shows that he has absolutely no belief in what he is saying. He wants dirty rivers, oil and gas drilling rigs, fracking for mines and any other destructive way he can use to make us an “economic rock star”. Oh, and the possibility of making our beautiful country one giant movie set, for the use of by hollywood lightweights. He is so evidently uncomfortable with this video.
This video shows all the beauty of New Zealand and none of the poverty and misery brought about by this travesty of a government. Total hypocrite.

    • William 11.1

Comedy gold indeed. The photo is a cracker, as is the vase of roughly arranged flowers. Their youtube channel seems to have five videos shot on the same day. There’s four changes of suit/tie/buttonhole for dear John (to give the impression of them being different events), but the same bedraggled flowers that appear in all the videos gives the game away.

      • Akldnut 11.1.1

Shit video with Pinnochio leading in, should have gone straight to the guts of the video.

The ultimate narcissist, the vain prick has a framed picture of Helen Clark conceding defeat behind him and a framed picture of his victory pose on the other side.

        Pathetic self adulation.

  12. BM 12

Key certainly isn’t as good of an actor as The Cunliffe, that’s for sure,

    3/10 for acting.

  13. framu 13

isnt putting a party logo on something like this illegal?

ie: you cant use govt money to promote your party

    • Yeah, it is, but if you point that out to a Nat they’ll just shrug and say that Helen did it, as if that’s a justification.

    • burt 13.2

      framu

      Is it illegal … I think the answer to that is traditionally;

The law is confusing, others are doing it too, it’s the way we have always done it…

If that childish defence fails to convince people that it’s ok then the ‘move on’ meme seems to work pretty well. If all else fails just carry on and use the power of parliament to kill off any pesky attempts to make you accountable – that sort of arrogance seems to win the PM the accolade of best PM ever – perhaps slimy John Key wants to be as revered for being as self serving as Clark was.

  14. Tracey 14

Like Coldplay, it will be a mistake. Wayne says we can trust Key cos he does.

Slater will be casting aspersions on National now, as he did the cancellation of DotCom’s party for such elementary “mistakes”.

farrar will explain why, even if it wasn’t a mistake, it’s ok.

  15. Whateva next? 15

Why not go all the way and change New Zealand to National Zealand, nothing would surprise me from this government!

  16. Lanthanide 16

  18. burt 18

Listen to the half thinking Labour supporters complaining about ‘political advertising’. What a bunch of half thinking dim-bulbs with short memories.

Let me guess – you recycle the attacks that you so staunchly defended your team for because it was courageous corruption when Labour did it but it’s just corruption when National do it. You retards need to take a long look in the mirror and realise its wrong when either team do it and just for once think that perhaps if you held your own party to the same standards as you hold the other guys to then things might change – rather than just have the accusers and the defenders swap sides in some mindless game of musical chairs.

    • QoT 18.1

because it was courageous corruption when Labour did it but it’s just corruption when National do it

      [citation needed]

      • burt 18.1.1

        One of Labours ( apparently ) more intelligent defenders Chris Trotter;

“Social peace for a paltry half-million dollars? Strikes me as the most courageous and forgivable kind of corruption.”

        See: http://nzconservative.blogspot.co.nz/2007/04/courageous-corruption.html

        • QoT 18.1.1.1

Chris Trotter is not an author at The Standard (thank god). So he’s irrelevant to your argument (and not only to your argument! Zing!)

And your evidence is a link to NZ Conservative? 🙄

        • Draco T Bastard 18.1.1.2

A link to an article that self-references and has no link to what Chris trotter actually said.

Man, you really are gullible aren’t you?

          • QoT 18.1.1.2.1

I’ve actually searched for the “courageous and most forgivable” line and the only results are NZ Conservative, No Minister, Kiwiblog and W****O**.

Of course, the column in which Trotter allegedly said these things is from 2006, and our media suck at keeping things live for longer than a year, and the Sunday Star-Times is the worst offender for never putting things online at all. So they could all be telling the truth.

But it doesn’t change the fact that burt’s sole piece of evidence for claiming that every Labour supporter on this blog has a double standard around National’s corruption is an eight-year-old column from someone who’s never written here.

            • burt 18.1.1.2.1.1

Trotter is a classic lefty and it’s clear that the standard MO of propaganda is to pretend he never wrote that shit supporting dear leader taking a chainsaw to democracy in her own best interests. Also no surprise the lovers of big self serving government like to pretend it never happened. Own your shit guys – you supported a crooked and self serving dictator because she carried a red flag.

  19. BrucetheMoose 19

I like the last bit. Welcome to the place of “open spaces, open hearts, and open minds.” That’s so sweet. As long as it is as Herr PM sees it, otherwise, he doesn’t give a shit about your concerns, desires or opinions. Oh well…Welcome to New Zealand.
    Heil Key.

Burt labour would have been robbed of the 2005 election by dirty money from the exclusive bretheren that money was laundered money from the US from extremist fundamentalists Australia prosecuted the bretheren for the $85 million illegal money transfer which some of it made its way to NZ .
