The Conservatives are in the process of self destructing.
ACT, I dunno – anyone heard from ACT lately? It will never be more than the Epsom branch of the National Party.
The Maori Party is going to have to come down on one side or other of a messy debate between iwi and the Nats over Auckland land. There are complications in either direction, I would not bet on them being stronger in the next Parliament.
Winston Peters – will he stand in 2017? Will NZF survive without him? Either way the Nats can’t count on them.
The Nats are running seriously short of coalition partners for the next election. With both Bennett and Collins jostling to replace Key they have their own internal problems as well.
So, there’s a lot of chatter about the Conservative Party at the moment, but the Nats are the only ones who have a reason to care.

With National support on the wane and with coalition partners reported as few – a revived Conservative Party could be National’s prescription. Let’s not forget approximately 4% of the vote went to the Conservative Party, yet they have no representation in parliament.
National’s Winter Blue’s have began. ‘The Season of Malcontent’ would be a better idiomatic label. Judith Collins and Paula Bennett ‘stab in with their steely knives but just can’t kill the beast’. It’s true that both ‘public opinion’ and the ‘talking heads’ believe if either Bennett or Collins seized the reigns of power before election 2017, National would flounder at the polls.
Labours fortunes are looking up – credit probably due to the election of Andrew Little. Unfortunately Labour is seemingly unable and unwilling to even critique previous National Governments to make a political point. Key’s Government are masters at dragging up Labours past for ‘point scoring’ and slight of hand.
With all that said; who are Labour’s suitors? With David Cunliffe well and truly out of the picture, centre voters and the disaffected could start seeing red. Though recent history shows if Labour can waste an opportunity; Labour will waste an opportunity. By 2017 The Greens may have waivered back to their niche. Only time will tell. With National’s ‘Season of Malcontent’ upon us, smaller coalition partners are feeling left out in the cold. Expect to see tempers flare as we come into the 2nd half of the year. Will Grant Robertson retain his roll as economics/finance spokesman for Labour? Could the Act Party seek winter comfort from Labour? Stranger things have happened.
