It is said that in a crisis a person's true personality comes out.

Winston Peters is returning to the spotlight, but can he return to Parliament?

….There’s also a belief among several near the party that older people – who traditionally back NZ First in larger numbers than the wider population – decamped in huge numbers to Ardern’s Labour. The first proper post-election study isn’t out yet, but given the results this seems very likely.

And no wonder. During the pandemic Winston Peters was a complete jerk. Demanding that the economy be put before public health. At the height of the threat memorably demanding that the borders be opened "Yesterday".
It wouldn't have escaped older voters attention that they were the most vulnerable to the infection. And so Peters and his party were deservedly kicked into touch.

    Will he be back?

    Who knows.

But, I would say unlikely. voters don't forgive treachery lightly.

    An alternative to gravitational storage.

California is set to be home to two new compressed-air energy storage facilities – each claiming the crown for the world’s largest non-hydro energy storage system. Developed by Hydrostor, the facilities will have an output of 500 MW and be capable of storing 4 GWh of energy.

    @ Robert Guyton:

I’ve alerted Lprent in the back-end, but I don’t know if he’s around this morning.

America is counting down the hours to Juneteenth. This will be the first time that the commonly recognised date for the end of slavery in the US will be marked with a Federal holiday.

To finally officially mark this momentous occasion in American history, from this distance, it will be interesting to see what shape the official, (and unofficial), celebrations in America take.

Whatever shape these celebrations take, I can see that the celebrations of this momentous event in US history growing even bigger in the coming years.

Biden makes 'Juneteenth National Independence Day' a federal holiday to remember the 'moral stain' of slavery and Kamala says: 'We must learn from our history and teach our children'

    • President Joe Biden signed a law Thursday to make 'Juneteenth National Independence Day' a federal holiday
    • On Wednesday night, the House of Representatives passed the bill with 14 Republicans voting against it
    • In the Senate, it passed by unanimously
    • 'Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation and a promise of a brighter morning to come,' Biden said at the White House
    • He called it a day to 'remember the moral stain and the terrible toll that slavery took on the country – and continues to take'

Labour's brand is growing in popularity in the UK, as it attracts an unlikely new member.

Brooke Sabin takes a 100 day road trip around NZ in an EV and writes about it for Stuff. One of the photos shows the car being charged in Murchison against the backdrop of the historic Commercial Stables – which was where Newmans housed their grooms and horses overnight in the days of coach and horses. What an image!

Winston’s gotta do what Winston’s gotta do. But despite the usual caveats about how he can never be counted out, his time has passed. The world, and New Zealander’s, have moved on.

I think Winston was the only one who ever really understood Lee Kuan Yu's economic development recipe – the one that all the tiger economies followed, that really goes back to Emperor Meiji. But he's somewhat cross-grained – it's never certain which way he'll split. His support of Jacinda was crucial back in the day – and almost pays for enabling Shipley. We'll see how he runs – and whether he's worked out that negging Jacinda is no path to victory yet.

Here's a thing. Arnold Rimmer and Darth-Ju both claim Prime Minister is increasingly divorced from reality.

But here, the Taxdodger's Union, closely associated with the ACT Party, has put up and taken down an ad trivialising both the suffering of Christchurch massacre victims and the globally recognised response by Jacinda Ardern. They did so on the command of Toyota New Zealand.

I ask, who is divorced from reality? These clowns are hard right wing student politicians gone bad.

What amuses me is how continually the right, those champions of individual property rights, get caught using some other person's property.

From this instance , to National and Eminem, to Trump and oh Neil Young, REM, Aerosmith, Adele, Elton John, Queen, Earth Wind and Fire, Rolling Stones, Guns N Roses……

It is like they have sort of sense of entitlement!

(disclaimer I think copyright should allow works to enter the commons no more than ten years after the death of the creator. ) Copyright law was originally in part to protect the right of the commons from companies retaining ownership forever. The one exception I think is where someone has died relatively young and the proceeds are going to support their immediate family.
