Another week before a crucial buy election and grannys lead online is a story that could be written anytime using any number of examples then:
celebrity, celebrity #2, lundy, dame nat appointed whatever the F she does, re-cyclone, police behaving badly (not really news), akl diversion for today, organ donation campaign emotive number, dame nat appointed whatever the F she does #2, cricket (no not about last nights qtr final) then NZF attempted smear article.

Politics toward the bottom down the right below the magazine section with no front page links on political buy election material but leads section with todays akl diversion piece already mentioned above.

Granny working for the 1%’ers as always.

Frankly Speaking in the side bar is worth a read (or a post?) Will the media continue to ask the right questions? Perhaps not when the bosses close the askers down.

hi Steve R, interesting solar article.

do you know how the panels conserve water?

    • stever 4.1

Hi. From my reading I think it’s the green roof that preserves water (well, it says creates less-runoff), not the solar panels.

    • Draco T Bastard 4.2

It’s the plants/dirt that will retain water reducing runoff.

      • gsays 4.2.1

hi draco and stever i see now, i dont redcommend reading articles on yr batfone before the eyes have warmed up.

The Nation on TV3 at 9:30. Winston and Joyce being interviewed.

    • Lanthanide 5.1

Winston has promised some sort of reveal today, I expect it’ll be a damp squib like always. Still, I’ve tuned in.

      • Lanthanide 5.1.1

Pretty much just a puff piece walkabout, nothing interest, not even an interview.

        • whateva next? 5.1.1.1

I think the “scoop” was that he once supported Labour??????
I switched off in case I started to think the whole programme is bought by National.
Dame Susan on, and “2 wongs don’t make a right” mention is merely to smear Winston….surely not “The Nation”, what have we come to?
Will tune into Politics in 60 seconds, which is the only bit worth watching these days.

    • Clemgeopin 5.2

Here are the links and videos of the Nation programme this morning:

      * Winston Peters : Says he could work with National on RMA changes. [Shows what a clever, smart and wise master politician he is!]

      * Interview: Steven Joyce about the by-election. [A clever master spinner! I felt a little sorry for him by the end, though!]

      * Interview: Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy. [A great interview. I was very very impressed with her views re race relations, except for her bad mouthing of Winston in the context of the by-election. That seemed too political and wasn’t necessary!]

      * Politics in 60 Seconds : The sharp-suited kings of satire Jeremy Corbett and Paul Ego [with their fantastic summary of the political week. The brilliant best show in town, all done in just 60 seconds! I look forward to them every week!]

      * Panel: Patrick Gower, Damon Salesa & Ben Thomas [ Damon Salesa was very good]

I’m loath to add this link as it’s a long, long piece. But well worth the read.

I’m one who thinks capitalism/liberalism can’t be reformed.

But some here seem to want to.

Really, why do people put up with capitalism.

Take the artificial economy. The paper ‘values’ are not real but when it turns to site, the debts sure are. Think about what could be done productively with the funds that go into that sinkhole.

An older article but a useful reminder of how crappy capitalism is and how those magical market mechanisms fail:

Key going to Gallipoli? I wonder what the guys that died there would say about how he is running the country they died for.
It is disgusting to think he is makes of show of standing anywhere near those guys.

    • mary_a 11.1

@ whateva next? Those poor soldiers who died at Gallipoli will be turning in their graves, to think their fellow Kiwis allowed someone as vile and corrupt as Key is to lead a government of NZ!

Shame on those who voted for him.

Hmm … Key at Gallipoli! So close to where ISIL operates too!

Petrobras, the company which was supposedly going to safely drill in deep water off our pristine East Coast beaches, is now in deep water itself fouling up the entire Brazilian economy. Petrobras scandal

And in a familiar link crony capitalism link, the Brazilian President was Petrobras President from 2003 to 2010.

    • Murray Rawshark 12.1

The writer of that article should learn to write Brazilian names correctly and interview more than just politicians from the Brazilian equivalent of the NAct Party, the PSDB. Petrobras has been mired in corruption ever since it was founded. To say that the only ex-President involved was Fernando Collor is totally wrong. They all have been up to their necks in it since the generals, and it was probably worse in the era of Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Since his party wants to privatise Petrobras, having already privatised a heap of mining companies for the “price of a banana”, he conveniently gets left out of the stories.

I had expected better from the Guardian.

  11. greywarshark 13

Just in passing. While reading a summary of an author Pete Dexter who used to be a columnist in the USA. This:
He began writing fiction after a life-changing 1981 incident in which thirty drunken Philadelphians, armed with baseball bats and upset by a recent column, beat the writer severely.

He had previously resigned from a newspaper job when the paper became politically partisan – but quit in 1972 because the paper’s owners forced the editorial page editor to endorse Richard Nixon over George McGovern.

  12. Penny Bright 14

Who’s coming to the ‘Stop Stealing Our Harbour’ protest tomorrow?

    WHEN: Sunday 22 March 2015
    TIME: 3.30pm
    WHERE: Queens Wharf
    Downtown Auckland

Are concerned citizens going to have to physically OCCUPY the port, in order to STOP this proposed railroaded reclamation, that has happened without public notification and consent?

(Remember what saved the threatened kauri tree?

The determined kauri tree sitter, who refused to budge, with a support team beside the tree, and a concerted social media campaign that involved thousands.

    A winning formula! 😉

    Penny Bright

  13. Clemgeopin 15

Good luck. I wonder if there has been sufficient time, polls and publicity happening for gathering of wide support.

Do give us an update after the protest goes through.

“Deep within the Police, an apparently ineradicable culture of misogyny continues to thwart every attempt to improve the Force’s handling of rape and sexual abuse cases.”

Chris Trotter writes a very pointed article in the Daily Blog.

I’m lost as to how to respond to what Roast Busters represents

The Henderon Police have been dysfunctional for years and the Takapuna based district commanders have never been able to get on top of it.

The national police force has been dysfunctional in protecting women and in giving them the security they need and deserrve. The failure to implement the Bazley report is disgraceful.

What is to be done with this force that seems incapable of reform?

      Does anyone care?

St Mary’s Cathedral, principal church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, water sprays homeless people to keep them away

So much for how you treat the least of these. Automatic system installed a year ago. To discourage homeless people from taking shelter outside the church doors. And if there’s water, it’s an easy next step to adding a few electric jolts to speed the process up.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-03-20/holy-water-church-sprays-homeless-water-during-drought

    • Paul 18.1

Sections of the Bible the Archdiocese of San Francisco might want to refer to.

      Luke 3:10-11
And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

      Matthew 25:35-36
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’

      Luke 10:25-37
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” …
