Will the debate address climate change? Will moderators call English on National’s $11.7bn hole lie?

  1. Muttonbird 1

The moderator is Tracey Watkins isn’t it? She’s not going to call English on anything difficult for fear of losing her ’embedded’ status.

  2. Cinny 2

    Tuned in via the youtube.

Lolz Bill tried to congratulate ChCh for their resilience, and they scoffed him.

Wonder if Bill will keep stuffing his hand in his pocket like the other night, he seems to that everytime he has something to hide or feels insecure, it’s almost like a reaction. Does it in parliament too

    Jacinda looks great

Update… both leaders were just told the poll results, watched bill as he heard the news, his body gave a slight jolt and after a few moments he blew wind up into his fringe to cool him down, you know when your brow is sweaty. That was an interesting treat seeing his reaction.

Crowd appears to be more supportive of Jacinda judging from applause levels

    • miravox 2.1

Wow! Bill really shouldn’t have messed up that dynamism line because the dynamism is standing on the other side of the stage.

I guess he knew it as he was falling from his mouth.

Probably hadn’t recovered from that poll result.

  3. Cinny 3

You fellas should tune into this, the crowd response is fascinating, lots of jeering and heckling from the audience towards English, especially when telling them about good health care and his reliable ministers.

  4. ScottGN 4

Jacinda seems to be rather enjoying herself.

  5. Kay 5

Bill should take up a new career as a stand up comedian. Impossible not to laugh every time he opens his mouth.

  6. hoom 6

Bills media trainer has told him to do a bunch of hand waving.
    Here’s a screenshot
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/94/Pinocchio_1940.jpg

  7. ScottGN 7

Jeez he drones on a lot…

  8. Cinny 8

Tracey asks… can we continue to market NZ as 100% pure etc.. Bill.. “yes we can”… the crowd jeers and yells at him, bill inserts hand into his pocket.

I like how Jacinda turns around to face him when he speaks.

    • Cinny 8.1

whoops it wasn’t tracey, was another lady, tracey coming to ask questions soon.

Jacinda, wows you go girl, I’m impressed she’s the strongest of the two, calling him out often, on all of his spin.

Bills bumbling just like his 2002 debate

  9. McFlock 9

lols – on climate change report

A: why won’t you release the report?
    E: It has been released
    A: it hasn’t
    E: well, leaked, whatever…

  10. hoom 10

I’d love to see Bills ‘100,000 out of poverty’ claim subjected to as much financial/policy detail analysis as Joyces’ hole.

Show me the $$$ Bill, how you gonna do it Bill?
    New taxes, profligate Govt spending?
Seems like a multi-billion $$$ hole in the Nats budget to me.

  11. You have to wonder whether the sound engineers deliberately made English’s mic volume lower than Ardern’s….

  12. Ovid 12

Jacinda’s owning this debate. I think she had her weetbix this morning.

  13. ScottGN 13

She just got big cheer for re-opening Night Schools. I love how that stupid, bloody idea from Key’s first term has come back to bite them.

    • Marcus Morris 13.1

As an older citizen who loved to go to the woodwork room at the local high school that is wonderful news.

  14. Cinny 14

Amy Adams and a handful of nat supporters all seated together appear to be the ones applauding Bill, but by crikey when Jacinda spoke about education, apprenticeships etc a large scattered amount of audience members clapped loudly.

Would love to be there to witness the whole crowd response, happy that the live stream is showing the audience now and then.

Wows the audience is noisy, shouting things out, dang, teleport please

  15. esoteric pineapples 15

Wish someone would mention the fact that the government owes $90 billion unless I missed that

    • infused 15.1

Ah, you mean that amount Labour wish to extend and pay back slower?

      • adam 15.1.1

        *Belly laugh*

Thanks infused for the great laugh, you can always be relied on to dribble out somthing utterly farcical, via a gross oversimplification.

      • John 15.1.2

Certainly can’t pay it back as fast as the Nats borrowed it sadly

  16. hoom 16

Jacinda called Nats out on their 18 new taxes when Bill tried to hit her with his list of 7 🙂

  17. Johnr 17

She is one fast learner. Few weeks in the big job, third debate and she owns it.
    Utterly outstanding

  18. Cinny 18

ROFL. English brags about how less kiwis are leaving NZ… Jacinda asks him.. are you saying this generation is staying home because of you bill?

Bill just told the crowd the most important thing to do for christchurch is to make a decision on the cathedral…. wowzers, does that mean he thinks the church is more important than the people? I wonder how the people of chch feel about that? Better health care or a new church….

  19. esoteric pineapples 19

Bill English says old people will still be able to enjoy a quarter of their lives with the pension – yep, nothing like the golden years of 67 to 92.

  20. Man she is the real deal. So good. Bill floundering ‘i know the generation cos I raised them’ His lying breath is deep.

  21. Anne 21

Has anyone noticed the sour puss faces of the Nats in the audience every time they clap Bill for something he’s said? Oh dear, they don’t like it up em…

  22. ScottGN 22

    Gerry Brownlee gets a boo!

  23. Yes he’s gone back to the cathedral lol what a knob

  24. r0b 24

Jacinda was phenomenal tonight. She’s ready to be PM.

  25. ScottGN 25

Her stump speech is pretty good.

  26. Cinny 26

WOW… the applause she got at the end, from so many and so loud, bravo Jacinda.

And the camera angle at the end, hard case, showed heaps of the crowd clapping and a few grey haired, old old school people, obvious nat voters, maybe 4 or so of them, just sitting there scowlling, arms crossed, made me laugh.

She won that debate, loved how involved the audience was

    • Anthony Rimell 26.1

I was there tonight. The feeling was electric! It was great to be there. Jacinda did indeed knock it out of the park. A special night!!

  27. Robert Guyton 27

Kiwibloggers are hurting, really hurting. We should send them some love.

    • Send them some love?

How about this piece of sage advice from Sun Tzu…

“Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death. If, however, you are indulgent, but unable to make your authority felt; kind-hearted, but unable to enforce your commands; and incapable, moreover, of quelling disorder: then your soldiers must be likened to spoilt children; they are useless for any practical purpose.”

They have become spoilt children,… and must accept the realistic possibility they will lose. Therefore ,… despite their destructive attitudes, none of us have rejected them. But we haven’t forgotten Dirty Politics , either.

  28. Pat 28

Jacinda Adern handled the few noisy hecklers well(better than Bill for a start…) and i cannot see any other opinion than that she came out on top in that debate…..but then I couldn’t see how bill was awarded the second so who knows…I’ll just take the latest poll as confirmation my appraisal was right

  29. Keepcalmcarryon 29

    Very impressive Jacinda.
    English floundering.
I think we are seeing a change of government at long last!

  30. Upnorth 30

11.7b is an over reach but and i still say but who are going to tell our civil service there is no payrise!
That is the question 200000 workers need to know

  31. Herodotus 31

Easy to work out English/Joyce strategy – negatively attach labour. Very little on what National will deliver but $1k pa for an average worker or $7/week for a pensioner.
When asked what his vision is all we got was an attach on Labour regarding taxation, i thought a vision is what YOU have – very lacking in substance.
IMO Jacinda has to make sure that she doesn’t fight against everything Bill comments on. Pick her battles.
Also that Bill will not make eye contact with Jacinda during any of the debates, yet Jacinda directs and looks towards Bill. I am sure that there are some out there that are more academically qualified to analysis the meaning of not paying attention to the other debater.

    • Seems its a minimizing / dominance tactic,- whilst looking to the camera as if addressing the nation. Alpha wolves do it to subordinates,… alternately ignoring them or outright attacking them. Bill has demonstrated both behaviors.

Which , in the case of Bill , – shows a particular calculated coldness , and lack of willingness to admit error. He is fearful.

Whereas Jacinda Adern keeps her eye on her prey. And just like a lioness, she shows no fear whatsoever.

      Shes got this.

      And she knows it.

  32. ScottGN 32

Currently 66% on Stuff giving the debate to Jacinda. And me too, of course.

  33. mickysavage 33

Interesting stat on time each person had …

    https://twitter.com/eftpus/status/905700352971776001

  34. Ad 34

Ardern’s team should have been much harder on agreed debate protocols.

    Poorly structured and adjudicated.

The Ardern campaign team need to protect their client far better. She is the highest posdible risk to the Labour Party if led to a mudfight like that again.

    • Pat 34.1

think she’s demonstrated she can cope with anything they throw at her…and as someone noted she is a quick study and improves every time.

    • Ad, .. one magnificent attribute of Adern is she is also a lateral thinker who thinks fast on her feet. She is a visionary , and engages people with not just cold ‘ logic’ , but with the heart. Every great leader has not minimized the powerful effect of speaking from the heart. Every last one of them either good or bad had that capacity. Yes, a good and popular leader needs to be ‘minded’ by their inner circle in order not to burn out ,… but also that good leader cannot /should not be muzzled or stifled excessively .

As opposed to Bill who favours a more rigid , structured framework.

And that , like it was in 2002, will be his exact same downfall.

Because he cannot adjust rapidly enough to ‘feel with his heart’ the changing mood of the nation.

  35. ianmac 35

Bill was early on a very Shouty Billy. He as usual avoided looking at Jacinda. Shouting over the other speaker is a bad look but I suppose Bill is copying Joyce.
And giving up after a while being shouty Bill and talking over Jacinda. Some one must have told him shouting and hectoring over Jacinda was a bad look. Perhaps his wife?
55% Jacinda 45% Bill -5% for moderators who let Bill have two thirds of the speaking time. Mind you it counted against Bill.

    • Funny how the thing you think is the best tactic in the heat of the moment is often the most ineffectual in reality,…

Its an Adern led govt post September 23rd.

Grab your hats , put on your socks and throw on your boots… we are off on an adventure !!!

And its gonna be a good one !

      🙂

  36. calltoaccount 36

Just thought to add this to help. To get the wretched stuff video to work, scroll through to the 1 hour, 30 minute mark, and the audio/video will start to play.

Used to work in web etc; beggars belief how rubbish the end result can be.

  37. Patricia 37

I bet the Nats are sorry they made Andrew Little’s life a misery – those tactics have come back to bite them very hard.

  38. peterlepaysan 38

english is a treasury robot. always has been, always will be. a thoroughly good drone.
