Weekend social is for non political chat. What’s on for the weekend, gigs, film or book reviews, sports, or whatever.

No politics, no aggro, why can’t we all just get along?

One of the biggest southerly swells of recent months running today / early tomorrow between Dunedin and Hicks Bay. If near places such gets ridden check it out for some oceanic goodness.

    • r0b 1.1

So when they say you’re never too old to learn to surf – is that true?

And a question to all Weekend social commenters – when should this post be scheduled each week?  It has been Friday 4pm so far, but I’ve had a call for Friday noon.  Any preferences?

      • And speaking of age… for those, like me, finding befuddlement is increasingly sneaking up on you when you least expect it, a tutorial on remembering has just been published.

It all has to do with Laday Gaga swimming in a huge tub full of cottage cheese.

        • r0b 1.1.1.1

Now I have to go and poke out my mind’s eye. Thanks very much!

On the positive side, dinner and a pint, here I come…

      • Mac1 1.1.2

rOb, a midday start would do for me.

Another suggestion. it seems that some of us are still engaged in last weekend’s “Weekend social” and it would help to have different postings differentiated in some way by number, date, whatever.

An excellent cross-the-divide idea is Weekend social with a ban on overt politicisation.

      • Armchair Critic 1.1.3

Weekend social is a great idea.
You are not to old to learn to surf.
Can you put some kind of time stamp (like for Open Mike) on the Weekend social posts?
Can/should you cut off the ability to comment once the new version is put up?

      • big bruv 1.1.4

When I was much younger I had a few mates who were into surfing, they were regulars (I believe the colloquial term is “locals”) at Wellingtons Lyall Bay.

Eventually I decided to give it a crack, the ‘thrill’ did not last long, apart from the water being unbelievably cold I soon realised that I was sharing that particular part of the ocean with human waste and sanitary napkins, the sight of a sanitary napkin stuck to the end of my borrowed surfboard was the final nail in the coffin of my fledgling surfing career.

I believe that part of the ocean is now a lot cleaner thanks to the work of various pressure groups and successive city councils, apparently one can even take seafood from the Lyall Bay/Moa point stretch of the coast line, I will just have to take their word for it, anybody who grew up in Wellington during the 70’s and 80’s would still look at seafood gathered from that area with a deep degree of suspicion.

      • vto 1.1.5

yes, never too old. Just make sure right board and beach lest the usual merriment arise from onlookers at novice attempts in giant surf.

Better be quick though, the swell is already drooping..

I’m going to see Simon Pegg- Nick Frost’s latest offering, Paul. Haven’t been to the movies in so long as they’re 99 percent shit these days, but this is bound to be good for a few LOLZ, if not as brilliant as Shaun of the Dead. Speaking of zombies, I shall also be reading World War Z, An Oral History of the Zombie War. Recommended for those geeks who wish to be prepared for the inevitable zombie apocalypse 🙂

    • chris73 2.1

Who would have thought Mel Brooks son would come up with something this cool?

    • r0b 2.2

Huh – small world.  A young relative made me read WWZ recently.  Surprisingly well done (and I’m not a horror fan by any means!).

    • jimmy 2.3

Ha, I was planning on doing a post in the social about zombies all week.

If learning how to survive the inevitable zombie apocalypse is what you want, die2nite is the game for you. Lots of planning, teamwork, scavenging in the post-apocalyptic wastelands, and fending off the zombie hordes that attack at midnight (9am real world time) by building a town with 40 strangers.

      Good times

      • Sookie 2.3.1

Heh, my mate tried to persuade me to come around and play that game with him sometime, when he heard that watching The Walking Dead put me off going outside for a fag at night for about a month 🙂

  3. Jim Nald 3

Book reviews … would non-fiction with political, economic content be acceptable?

    • r0b 3.1

Judgment call.  If political content then use open mike.  If general interest then weekend social.  In general though I’d love to see book reviews – so much to read, so little time!

      • Jim Nald 3.1.1

        Judgment call sounds good.

One here for the weekend social, and another to be posted on Open Mike tomorrow, err, later this morning.

Of Nobel gold medals dissolved and extracted …

Of urine, phosphorus and bombs …

        Book reviews by Robin McKie:

        Periodic Tales by Hugh Aldersey-Williams

  4. Olwyn 4

Speaking of zombies, I am going to the Auckland Domain on Sunday at midday to cheer on the Leopard skin Death Machine in the Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix.

  5. Samuel Hill 5

Any good gigs in Wellington this weekend?

  6. Tanz 6

Can we have a real social, or blogger/reader/club drinks?

    • r0b 6.1

Anyone can post an invite here, and see who turns up! But our readers are spread all over the country, so there’s no way to ever get a very representative group together.

There’s always Drinking Liberally, if you’re that way inclined…

80 metres of Karo hedge to attend to tomorrow, both sides and a metre off the top but three of us on the job so it’ll only take half a day..sigh…and then beer and a boned, rolled and seasoned shoulder of Fish’s home grown lamb roasted with all the bits. The SO arrived home from work this evening with fresh figs from a workmates tree so we’ll be having them for pud, brown sugared, a gentle bake and dished up smothered with whipped cream.

  8. rosy 8

I must finish a write-up (waaayyyy late) and prepare for the first of the summer visitors 🙂

captcha: submit –  the date for this is far too close for my liking

  9. Colonial Viper 9

Its been a big long week, successful on some days and not on others. I think right now a nice quiet pinot gris is in order. And what’s that I hear in the background? The sound of latin rhythms. Oh this might be a good night after all 🙂

Sidney Lumet has died. One of the all-time great film directors.

TVNZ should clear the schedules for a week, and show a Lumet film every night as a tribute.

Then again, they already show “Network” every night at 6 o’clock …
    RIP Sidney.

I thought that my brother years ago was strange when to save time getting to school, he would get dressed the night before and sleep in his school clothes. (A failure.)
Today I heard of another slow starter for morning school who to save time, he ate his breakfast the night before. Failure also.
