Once upon a time
1. Ukraine was promised by Russia that its borders would never be challenged by Russia if they returned nukes based there to Russia.
2. Ukraine was divided over being pro EU or pro Russia, a pro Russian leader was deposed over the issue.
3. Russia decided this was cause for a 1000 year reich neverland to return to on earth Europe and sent its military across the border into Crimea and allow off duty Russian soldiers to assist an insurrection in the Donbass.
4. There had been no condition that Ukraine had to be pro Russian to keep its territorial integrity, just the inference they got good terms for gas if there leader was pro Russian.
5. There was some sort of cease-fire based around the Minsk Accords.
6. Russia then began insisting the new government (elected on a peace talks with Russia platform) declare it would never join NATO. Also Russia sought assurances from NATO that it would not place foreign troops and offensive weapons in the nations of Eastern Europe (former USSR Baltic States and former Warsaw Pact nations).
7. Russia invades Ukraine and attacks Kiev, Kharkiv and Mariupol.
8. Then falls back to a Duginite nova russia annexation play – first joining Crimea to the Donbas, and then expanding north and westward (with Odessa and Dnipro as ultimate targets).
In a sane world Russia would have insisted on plebiscites in the Donbas and Crimea in return for accepting Ukraine in the EU (and Ukraine would have agreed in return for Russia taking over a share of Ukraine’s national debt if they voted to secede).
In the world of 2022-
1.Ukraine gets the long range missile and other artillery it needs to drive Russian forces back into Crimea and contain Russia to the Donbas.
2. It is important that Ukraine’s farm resources be available to the world market.
3. Russia pays compensation to Ukraine for the destruction of Mariupol, Kharkov etc – if not, sanctions on Russia do not end.
4. Ukraine does not join NATO, but does the EU. NATO commits to the defence of all member states of the EU (such as Ukraine, Finland and Sweden).
5. EU and Russia develop a FTA (dependent on 2) as does EU-Norway/UK/Canada/USA.
6. NATO explores its future, whereby it disbands and re-forms in a new way.
7. USA/Canada/UK/Norway forma new NATO and has a defence treaty with the EU. The EU also has a defence treaty with Russia.
NATO/EU and Russia love the Armenians and the Kurds and everyone agrees Erdogan is an …….. Peace in our time.
