Apparently 8chan got taken down after the two massacres the other day. In announcing the decision to cut ties with 8chan, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince called the site "a cesspool of hate." https://www.cbsnews.com/news/8chan-down-forum-tried-to-get-back-online-bitmitigate-but-voxility-appears-to-have-blocked-it/

"Hours after a web security and network provider cut off 8chan, a controversial far-right online forum linked to white supremacy, the website's new provider is facing repercussions. The suspected terrorist who shot and killed 22, and injured 24 more in an El Paso, Texas Walmart, allegedly posted a hate-filled screed to 8chan before his attack Saturday."

"An 8chan administrator announced early Monday that it would be relaunching the site using the Canadian cybersecurity company BitMitigate as a replacement for the online services firm Cloudflare. 8chan was temporarily shut down Sunday night, after Cloudflare announced it would no longer support the controversial site."

is there an economic emergency with the RBNZ doing a double cut today?

"This was a stunning decision – in the history of the official cash rate, the only times the cash rate has been cut by 50 basis points or more have been after the 9/11 terrorist attack, during the GFC, and after the Christchurch earthquake. We are very surprised that the RBNZ decided to cut 50bps in today's environment," Westpac economist Dominick Stephens said following the decision.

Just on tv1 . One of the ihimatao protesters racially abusing an Asian looking cop telling him to go back to his country.

    • JanM 5.1

Oh dear – I'm a bit suspicious of these protesters – there's something that doesn't ring quite true

      • bwaghorn 5.1.1

Just pointed it out because Maori and woman especially round here make out to be paragons of virtue. Turns out they can be fuckwits too.

    • The Al1en 5.2

Horrible stuff. That racist should be charged with a hate speech crime.

After all, we did all agree, they are us.

      • greywarshark 5.2.1

Don't be snarky TA. It is in response to observed facts, 1 there was a racial outburst (I believe by a Maori woman) and 2 there are a number who come here are very sensitive about these matters as applying to their own group.

        • The Al1en 5.2.1.1

Are you really attempting to make allowances for a "racial outburst"?

Can you, for future reference, provide a list of all circumstances where you believe it's acceptable.

          • greywarshark 5.2.1.1.1

I believe in reasonable freedom of speech, but not licence.

            • The Al1en 5.2.1.1.1.1

That means nothing. Do clarify, especially with the context of hate speech against immigrants, and what you understand to be reasonable freedom of speech in this instance.

What Genter threatened to hold her breath and resign, that is hilarious.

Well, she didn't, but funny anyway.

        • Poission 6.1.1.1

Yeah like under her associate health portfolio ,getting told she was not even wrong (by hospital dieticians) with regard to patient diet.

"However, Lester denied the allegations, putting the "made up yarn" down to councillors having a go at the Greens and interested in publicity for the mayoralty race."

        • Poission 6.1.2.1

And other councillors who were not at the briefing said Lester told them the same thing.

    • Anne 6.2

However, Lester denied the allegations, putting the "made up yarn" down to councillors having a go at the Greens and interested in publicity for the mayoralty race.

Sounds about right. The right-wing faction on the Auckland City Council have done the same sort of thing in the past.

Edit: Oops, RG has already posted. Great minds etc.

    • Herodotus 8.1

Ask building supply coys what their ATB are like, sales agents about the number of spec home that are sitting or developers as to extension of settlement terms. There is little that can be done with the outstanding current debt, but for suppliers to manage to reduce their customers exposure by not extending more debt until current levels are reduced, which slows down future builds.

I only refer to greater Auckland in this from my observations in the building materials trade, but everyone has their view on the health of the industry.

    • TootingPopularFront 8.2

Business confidence surveys have a bit of a history of being misleading, I wouldn't be surprised to see the purveyors of dirty politics behind the tainted business confidence narrative that has been a constant drone since the election: https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/106996366/businessnz-admits-error-in-business-confidence-survey-that-lacked-validity

Police seek public's help to locate person in relation to fatal pursuit in Christchurch

I think that if we have to suffer this sort of thing from mad and bad people we need to expose them to the excitement they desire and give them a public whipping. The idea of getting a wonderful civilisation going where everybody is nice to everyone else has gone. Cooler punishments like locking people up for long expensive times in prison are not working. Just revert back to simple punishments that match the low-life society we have created. And some hard labour planting trees after. Whipping and stocks they worked for the colonial times we are reverting back to. Justice meted out is not fit for the crime, and needs an overhaul.

  9. greywarshark 10

The idea that walkers and cyclists are equal and both just out to enjoy the fresh air and listen to the birds is a common derangement in Council planning officials.

In a fine example of efficiency and good budgeting, if a cycling group did the maintenance work that the Council should have been doing, in gratitude the Council Group Manager Asset Management is giving them rights to harass track walkers. Why shouldn't 4-wheel drivers be allowed the same rights? This is plain bias and favouritism. The Manager should have his ass-it kicked.

Bicycles are machines. Machines damage people, and when young people ride these machines you have a very unequal relationship and understanding about what enjoying fresh air out and about is. This from Hastings today.

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/396200/mountain-bikers-grinding-gears-of-elderly-walkers-on-pathways

The Hastings District Council, which declined to be interviewed on the subject, did not say whether it would be replacing the temporary warning signs that had been taken away to ensure walkers were kept safe.

(Does this mean that the temporary warning signs had made walkers unsafe?)

However, in a statement it said the reserves were for everyone to enjoy.

"The council is asking people to show mutual respect and courtesy when using the tracks as everyone has a right to access these open spaces, and to do so safely," Hastings District Council group manager asset management Craig Thew said.

"The adopted Reserve Management Plan (RMP) identified the community's desire to improve the walking tracks and to create cycle tracks that could enable more separation of cyclists from walkers.

"The local mountain bike club has taken a proactive step of taking responsibility for constructing the mountain bike tracks via both voluntary labour and fundraising. This means ratepayer funds can be focused towards the investment into the walking track upgrades, wider signage improvements, and the many other actions identified in the RMP."

RNZ has requested a copy of any risk assessments or safety management plans undertaken by the council prior to the construction of the track, but it had not yet responded.

Children of undocumented immigrants arrested in Mississippi rely on strangers for food and shelter

      NEWS

      Posted: Aug 7, 2019 / 10:52 PM UTC / Updated: Aug 7, 2019 / 10:52 PM UTC

Following this massive illegal immigration enforcement many children of those arrested across the state are now left homeless with nowhere to go.

12 News Alex Love went out to Forest, Mississippi where community leaders are coming together to put them up for the night in a gym.

These children who some are as young as toddlers were relying on neighbors and even strangers to pick them up outside their homes after school and drive them to a community fitness center where people tried to keep them calm. But many kids could not stop crying for mom and dad.

An 11-year-old girl is left crying outside in Forest after her dad was arrested.

Fighting back tears 11 year old Magdalena Gomez Gregorio expressed to us her devastation being alone without her dad.

“Government please show some heart,” Gregoria cried. “Let my parent be free and everyone else please don’t leave the child with cryness and everything.”

This came after ice agents raided several food processing plants in Mississippi arresting 680 people believed to be in the country illegally.

“While we are a nation of immigrants, more than that we are first and foremost a nation of laws,” Southern District U.S Attorney Mike Hurst argued.

A girl tries to eat, but can’t fight back tears wondering where her parents are.

But those children left behind and families impacted by each raid stressed their parents and friends are good people.

“I need my dad and mommy,” Gregorio said. “My dad didn’t do anything, he’s not a criminal.”

“The children that I’m with their moms been here for 15 years and she has no record,” Christina Peralta told us. “A lot of people here have no record they’ve been here for 10-12 years.”

For Christina Peralta who’s the godmother of two children who’s mom was arrested, she’s helpless as she watches the boys wonder when they’ll see their mother again.

“He said his mom is gone, that he’s upset with Trump, he said he just wants his mom back,” Peralta continued. “And they’ve been crying all day long since they got home from school.”

But with the help of Clear Creek Boot Camp owner Jordan Barnes and other community leaders the kids will have a roof to sleep under at his gym for the night with donated food to eat.

“We’re going to have bedding available for them and we’re going to have food available for them just to get them through the night,” Barnes explained. “And if they need transportation to school tomorrow we’ll also take care of that.”

And in times like these those in forest stress you cannot forget the children through this.

“I understand the law and how everything works and everything needs to have a system,” Barnes stated. “But everybody needs to hold the kids first and foremost in their minds and that’s what we’ve tried to do here is give them a place to stay and ease the pain a little bit.”
