Yep, ditto. Heard on RNZ today from the person overseeing the testing of the hackability of the on line voting system. He said they’ve spent ALOT on trialling it, as if the money spent factor was an guarantee of voting safety and sounded over confident and almost “she’ll be right” about the security of the system.
Wouldn’t and couldn’t trust it. NZ Post “receivers”, where you’d normally post your ballot are fairly hack proof and don’t need to have heaps spent on testing their security. I can’t recall the last time someone sabotaged local body elections via the post. If someone does, they can enlighten us.
Trouble is, NZ Post have been pulling out their receivers left right and centre all over the country, so even participating in our two flag referendums may involve a drive to drop off your ballot paper.

I was unfortunate enough to have tuned in to The Huddle this afternoon which featured Nick Leggett, the Mayor of Porirua, and Jordan Williams of the taxpayers association.
Larry asked Nick about online voting and Nick was enthusiastic about trialling it in local elections as a way to engage the youth vote in both local and general elections. He pointed out that just 1/5 of under 35s vote in local body elections.
Williams, Jordan that is, immediately used dirty politics and claimed right there on air that Nick’s stance was a left wing stance.
He began the attack.
Nick said nothing, whether out of respect for the other’s point of view, or from speechlessness that Jordan Williams would stoop so low, so bluntly, and so quickly, I do not know.
When it was Nick’s turn, to his credit, he fired back and said the Jordan and his ilk didn’t want online voting because it would erode their position of power.
Jordan Williams snorted, Joyce like, and Larry Williams giggled.
Since when does the elected mayor of a city in New Zealand have to fight on the radio for an even playing field against a two bit beltway lawyer like Jordan Williams?

I know Josie Pagani oozes right wing though out of every orifice possible, and I know Phil Quin is a very depressed person who wants to fight Labour as the solution to his depression, but I didn’t know Leggett had similar problems.
Nick Leggette was the only Mayor in the Greater Wellington area who was keenly promoting the super city option, the idea of which has since been scrapped.
I’d hear him comment on issues in the local media and always think why did Porirua vote for such a right wing nut? It was a surprise to later find he was Labour. Maybe locals simply trusted the Labour name when they saw it on the ballot paper – after all the Mana electorate is Labour – who knows.
Well, what a dire situation we are in then. That even the right of the left are taken down and silenced by the dirty politics brigade on a nationwide radio spot.
Yeah, Nick Leggett is indeed a good chum and political soulmate of Phil Quin / Josie Pagani. Essentially kiwi wannabe Blairites who keep in close contact with the lavishly-funded Blairite Progress group in Britain.
Nick Leggett stood in the Porirua Mayoralty race as an independent, not for Labour. He’s either a party member or former member, like Quin closely associated with the old Mike Moore Right faction.
He won by a fairly substantial margin almost entirely because he was endorsed by the highly popular former Mayor Jenny Brash. Apart from some brief publicity more than a decade ago for being one of NZ’s youngest city councillors, he was extremely low profile and very few voters (outside of his northern suburbs ward) had ever head of him. All it needed was prominent headlines in the local paper – Brash endorses Quin. Also helped that the field was crowded with high profile mayoral aspirants and so he greatly benefited from an enormously split vote.
