    ‘New Zealand will provide $500,000 in humanitarian assistance to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to provide shelter and access to basic services for refugees and migrants.

    The public housing waitlist has rocketed past 10,000 as more people wait longer for public housing.

    At the end of 2018 fully 10,712 eligible households were waiting for state or social housing – 73 per cent more than a year ago, and over three times the number waiting at the end of 2015.

          The prior national governments approach to housing is to blame.

          Current government is building more state houses. At least they are doing something. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

          yep, lets regulate air bnb as a business with regulations, health and safety inspections, licensing, and taxes levied and lets see how many properties will go back on the regular rental market, as that in many areas of the country is the issue, or are you saying that the Landlords of Queenstown are hard done by 🙂

          Landlords (as the name says) don’t sell a hovel, the money is in the land not the wooden shack or the gjgardner Mcmansion.

            Don’t get me wrong if you’re a landlord there’s obligations and responsibilities you have to meet.
            I could never rent a place to someone that was damp and cold, if I wouldn’t live in it, then I wouldn’t expect anyone else to.

            The problem here is Twyford because he’s more interested in political optics than finding workable solutions, he’s completely fucked up the private rental market and made the NZ housing problem so much worse.

            He should just fuck off before he does any more damage, egotistical amateur.

                      and is it not sad, that no one actually has to try real hard to be better then them, they are that bad.

                      they got elected on bringing about change, and they have started doing that.
                      my friend who is on a benefit, can finally go to her doctor and afford food for the week in the same week!!!!. Why? Because her doctors visits are now cheaper then they were under National. For someone who has survived thyroid cancer and needs regular medication, that is a lot of money saved.
                      She is also a tenant who moves every two years on average – or when the house goes on the market for sale, or when the rent goes up to a point where she can’t afford it anymore. She now has no more one week fee to give to real estate people.

                      These little changes may mean nothing to do you, but they make her life much easier and cheaper.

                      oh and the heating allowance….my mother in law was happy about that too. 🙂

                      and these are just a few of the many little things that happened since the new government came about, plus new houses. Yei! Win! Well done!

                      So its not that they are just a bit better then the No Mates Party, they are better.

                      But feel free to send a letter to the NO Mates Party telling them how they too could be just that bit better then Labour, and who knows maybe they will. And then – with two parties taht are trying real hard to be good – maybe the things in this country that need changing would change. But then the current lot would never do anything for beneficiaries not named Paula, John and Bill.

                  Yeah, those are the lying fucks – announce they’re building new state homes in june, yet the total state housing stock has dropped by another 200 dwellings when september comes around. Like pretty much every other HNZ quarterly report when they were in office.

                      net build in 4 years = 280 houses or 70 houses per year,

              He hasn’t fucked up our private rental market. Look after your tenants and they’ll look after your investment. IE don’t rip them off and most of the time they won’t trash your rental.

              When people don’t feel valued, that’s when things can go wrong. Call it being considerate.

              But when greed kicks in well… hello Air BnB lets take advantage of that instead.

              Sabine is completely correct re Air BnB, it’s a major issue. And another legal loop hole that needs to be closed.

              As the digital world changes and develops we need to make sure NZ laws keep up to date, or we’ll just get exploited by loop hole cowboys.

            The disruptive technology of airbnb is primarily to blame for the reduction in available medium and long term rentals available to young families.

            You see rental owners crowing about it all the time which betrays the claim that they are somehow good citizens providing for those less fortunate.

            Further eroding this claim is the fact they squeal like stuck pigs when it is asked of them to provide something as simple as a warm and dry house for tenants who pay most of their wages in rent.

          Most of those people on the housing wait list wouldn’t have been able to get a private sector rental anyway.

          You have to remember that this all blew up under National, when they sold houses and purged the waiting list. Landlords could do what they like back then.

          Touble is, when you let landlords do what they like, they put rents up by 100%-200% and they kick tenants out on a whim.

      For my sins I listened to some of the debate on the Prime Minister’s statement after question time in the House.

      What struck me was the total lack of realisation from the nats that the problems the Coalition is dealing with were of their (the nats) making.

      It’s as if a door has closed on their collective memories – or to echo George Orwell, before 2017 good, after 2017 bad.

      All I can say is WTF and we need to bring back the Mines Dept as a stand alone Government Dept like any modern Western style Government has like Oz, GB, EU and Canada.

      This shit has gone to far as we are forgetting the past IRT Mines Accidents and it needs to end now along with all the other that has happened since 1984! As every Government Dept has been ran in the ground and that’s before we start looking wagers, living and employment standards compared to similar countries including *Australia in size, population and economic wealth.

      But how to 30 odd years of the BS Neo Con/ Lib economic theory, but how do it without the pain that happened in the mid 80’s to the 90’s is the question?

      I’ve included Australia, as most expat moved there during the mid 80’s and now. Also they have CCT, compulsory Super, award rates with a strong Union base, a healthy infrastructure building plan that is slowly kicking goals etc etc.
