      New Zealand has just over 0.2 guns per person. USA has approximately 0.9 guns per person. The USA is approximately 4x more heavily armed per capita than New Zealand is.

        Here in NZ we use firearms for one of three things :

        1) Hunting

        2) Police/ Military

        3) Sports.

        We DON’T use em for personal protection , we DO put a cap on the magazines, we DON’T allow civilian use of semi / automatic weapons. In fact , – if your such a shit shot that you cant take your deer down with a 6 shot magazine , – its back to the rifle club for practice for you , wanker !

        And don’t think you can wander down the bloody streets after purchasing your gleaming new 6 shot Remington pistol and think your the man , either. It aint gonna happen in NZ , bud .

    Am I missing something with the current cultural respect issue or does it only seem to work one way?

    If I visited Iran I would expect to follow their kaupapa. If it was inappropriate to greet a woman by shaking their hand I would not do it.

    But when they come here we still have to follow theirs? It is our practice for handshakes to be exchanged if people are not well enough acquainted for a kiss on the cheek. Or in other settings a hongi.

    I’m confused.

      As I’ve always understood it, in Anglo-Saxon societies (can’t speak for other Europeans, let alone Maori or Pasifika), it’s up to the woman whether a handshake occurs. It’s not considered rude for her not to offer one, and quite a few don’t.

      So: if you’re the man, wait and see – if she sticks out her hand, take it (but don’t grip too hard). If she doesn’t, then that’s that.

          When I did a diploma in Science and Technology @ Waikato Polytechnic there was a Muslim lady from Somalia… she was delightful , yet guarded. I, being the inquisitive bloke that I am ,… was intrigued.. the English tutor ( who was in her 60’s , encouraged her … ) …

          It turned out , that … due to the chauvinistic and patriarchal nature of the Somalian male slobs who ruled over her,… that after tech ,… she had to cook for the family , put the children to bed, and generally tidy up when she got home.

          She was continually exhausted.

          She was wonderfully humble, an apt student , and a very lovely young lady… but here she was… subjected to these archaic medieval type oafs … and I was baffled by such cultural loyalties… she was timid to speak to me and I was dumbfounded being of Western heritage…

          I was appalled at the waste of human potential.

          Take from that what you will,… all I knew was that a potentially brilliant achiever was being sidelined by insecure , bitter men who felt threatened by the potential earning power and independence of a young lady …

          I will never forget her , … all I remember is that it was all so wrong and unjust…

          And that she was a real cool young woman that could have achieved so very much more, … . That was being mistreated for cultural / political reasons. And that it sucked bloody big time.
