After the Morgan Poll last night, this becomes a lot more interesting.

    Waatea 5th Estate
Labour and the Maori and Mana Parties

    http://www.newshub.co.nz/politics/nzs-first-political-party-dedicated-to-immigrants-2016082919

The new kid on the block, keen on law and order and immigration, between this lot and the maori party i would say the left could be dead in nz in ten years.

    • Cinny 2.1

I disagree, this new party “the peoples party’ whom want to look after asian and indian immigrants, may split the national party vote. I feel the type of person whom may vote for this new party is probably a ‘national party voter’. Key appears to be worried, hence the letter sent to asians and indians claiming to be there for them if there is a burglary.

Personally I’m not into race based politics, this feels like another race based party rather than a ‘peoples party’. Go for it “peoples party’ chase those national party voters and split the vote.

      • Garibaldi 2.1.1

Let’s just hold back a bit here. We’ve seen this kind of thing before and I don’t fancy their chances of getting good policy together for all immigrants without major hiccups. If it does get up and running we all know it would support the Right …. hey maybe it’s a Nat plot to replace Act !!

        • Cinny 2.1.1.1

You could be Whyte, and maybe I’m Wong, all I want is for Key to be gone.

Still think it will split the right vote, maybe ACT should stand as well as?

The left would be wise to use MMP to their advantage

    • Jake 2.2

And so it begins. So race doesn’t matter, they’ve all come here to be kiwis, yeah right. Time for a binding referendum on immigration and the future shape of NZ demographics. Also time to make the right to vote a privilege for citizens only, as is normal practice on other countries of the west. Demographics is destiny.

A party like this one will take votes from both Labour and National, but once they get over 5% they may end up as kingmakers. At that stage the price of their support to a government may involve jamming the immigration floodgates open to increase their population and get more leverage in NZ.

The days of NZ being a european/pacifica country are rapidly drawing to a close. I don’t recall anyone ever asking the NZ population for permission to change the demographics in this way. I fear for my descendents, the indigenous population of a colonized country don’t usually do very well.

    • Draco T Bastard 2.3

For the Mt Roskill seat it may ensure that National doesn’t win it as the right-wing will be split. They’ll definitely prop up a National led government – if they’re actually voted in.

      • Andre 2.3.1

They would have a fun coalition with National and Winnie!

        • Leftie 2.3.1.1

Listen to what Winston says and how he says it, he won’t be supporting the Nats or anyone associated with them any time soon Andre.

          • Draco T Bastard 2.3.1.1.1

Yep. Winston and NZ1st are diametrically opposed to what National stands for.

            • Andre 2.3.1.1.1.1

But, but, Puckish and friends assure us Winnie might go with National. Y’know, coz Winnie always says he’ll negotiate with the biggest party first.

              • Puckish Rogue

Yes and I stand by that. There are as many reasons for Winston to go left as there is right but if it comes down to National Winston and Lab/Greens needing Winston then I still think Winston will go right because it means theres only two parties sharing one pie rather then three

however he could also go left so I think its really, really stupid to say that he’ll go left or right with 100% certainty

                • Andre

Maybe. But I reckon a National-NZFirst-NZ People’s Party coalition would be a lot like ferret-legging.

                  • Puckish Rogue

Yes it would but I don’t think it’ll come to that, it’ll be National and Winston and if needed it’ll be up to Winston to decide whop gets in

                    Maybe

    • Michelle 2.4

Law and order what a joke where not in Indian or Asia where they don’t have a proper fair justice system. Also when you have increasing poverty rates and homelessness tag unemployment to that you have a recipe for disaster more poverty equals more crime. And you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know this.

Anyone else having trouble with the Comments/Replies/Opinions tabs?

When I click them the page scrolls down a bit and they disappear.

    Two recent changes are

An update to FF to 48.02
Presently having to use a wireless connection through my cellphone

    • alwyn 4.1

The scroll bar on the far right of my screen moves the whole screen. The comments only fill about half the space that seems to be available. However the other scroll bar, immediately on the right of the latest comments does seem to scroll through the comments themselves.
Do you have two scroll bars on a phone?
I am using a desk top so my screen may be different.
One thing I am now missing is the search option. That vanished over the weekend.

      • Draco T Bastard 4.1.1

Do you have two scroll bars on a phone?

I’m using my desktop which is connected through my phones wireless to a fibre connection. I was actually wondering if that may be the problem but if the search is gone it could be Lynn doing some work on the site. Or an update to WordPress that’s stuffed up a plugin.

        • alwyn 4.1.1.1

          I misunderstood.
I thought you were using the phone to enter comments etc.
I didn’t realise you were talking about the connection rather than the device.

    • Sacha 4.2

Same behaviour, FF48.0. Replies tab also been blank for last couple weeks for me.

    • Draco T Bastard 4.3

Ok, now on laptop @ Uni and have same issue.

  8. “A National Party leader is defending controversial Kiwisaver fund investments in weapons, highlighting the “sweet explosive justice” of killing terrorists.

Christchurch East party chair Peter Maguire made the comments during a Facebook discussion on Friday, attracting the ire of other users.”

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/83703605/christchurch-national-party-leader-backs-sweet-explosive-justice-of-kiwisaver-weapons-investment

    • Puckish Rogue 8.1

Why do politicians keep insisting on going on social media for this type of carry on

  9. What does it say about a man to make such a statement? What ideology drives him? Do others of his ilk hold a similar view? Puck?

    • Macro 9.1

      Maybe he has never seen this ;
Warning contains graphic images of 10 children killed by cluster bombs:

    • Puckish Rogue 9.2

I’m guessing (only guessing mind you) that because it was on Facebook that he was probably trying to troll the other person a bit by saying something outrageous deliberately to provoke a reaction (I wouldn’t know anything about that of course)

      • National Party leader, trolling? It gets worse. Do you have a view on Kiwisaver/clusterbomb issue, Puck? Do you share the views of your stablemate, Peter Maguire?

        • Puckish Rogue 9.2.1.1

Much like most other people I haven’t checked where my kiwisaver funds are invested in

IF I did I wouldn’t be dumb enough to post them on Facebook that’s fer darn sure

          • Robert Guyton 9.2.1.1.1

Yeah, but do you have a view on investments in nuclear weapons or cluster bombs, as is being discussed in the media? Do you support your otherwise-like-minded pal, Peter Maguire, National Christchurch East party chair?

    • Gabby 9.3

Just being a bit of a fuckwit, most likely.

    • Macro 10.1

Yep! That is what it is all about – but you try telling that to the Nat voters and they will never believe you.
After all Uncle John says “he’s comfortable with it” and the “wat me worry!” persona sails on

    • Graeme 10.2

We’re worried about US corporates throwing their weight around. Talk to a Yank about it and they’re petrified that that some upstart from where-ever will start suing Uncle Sam for being Uncle Sam.

Much more likely that one of the first ISDS cases will be Fontera vs Canadian govt, or whoever tries to protect Wisconsin dairy farmers. There’s plenty of other possibilities too. There’s just a few political hurdles to this thing getting through the US process.

      • Pat 10.2.1

but the lesson is that whomever sues whom it will be corporates the likely recipient of taxpayer funds and the everyman that bears the consequences of the chilling effect.

        • Andre 10.2.1.1

As soon as I originally heard about the ISDS process years ago I thought it was seriously fucked up and wondered why anyone would sign up to it. But it never occurred to me that vulture fund types would go and buy or start companies just so they could take an ISDS case, which is what that article says seems to have happened.

          • Pat 10.2.1.1.1

as the article says, there is no need for the ISDS provisions and they should be dumped from all trade agreements, including existing.

  10. Paul 12

    ACT.
Representative of 1% of the vote.
So why does Jim Mora’s Panel have so many people on its show with ACT views?
Stephen Franks today was just another example.
    Please explain RNZ.

    • joe90 13.1

My, how time flies when you’re having fun burning fossils.

Continents and oceans in the northern hemisphere began to warm with industrial-era fossil fuel emissions nearly 200 years ago, pushing back the origins of human-induced climate change to the mid-19th century.

The first signs of warming from the rise in greenhouse gases which came hand-in-hand with the Industrial Revolution appear as early as 1830 in the tropical oceans and the Arctic, meaning that climate change witnessed today began about 180 years ago.

Researchers in Australia found evidence for the early onset of warming after trawling through 500 years of data on tree rings, corals and ice cores that together form a natural archive of Earth’s historical temperatures.
