A mate just sent me this, classic:

50 comments on “Young Tory of the Year ”

  1. Akldnut 1

Classic tory – bringing down the “House”

  2. Vinsin 2

Hilarious, what show is this taken from?

  3. Ianmac 3

Brilliant!!! I seem to recognize those wise (dogwhistles, oops) words. Heard them recently. Ummmmm. Now where did……

  4. Felix 4

I think the show was just called “Fry & Laurie”.

  5. Scribe 5

    Very funny indeed.

  6. Tigger 6

Hilarious. The blue colour and arrow effect on the billboard on the stage is very like the blue colour and fast forward arrows National used this year. Spooky.

  7. Dave 7

hahahaha that was some really funny stuff 🙂 it’s made my day

  8. bobo 8

Great, I miss comedies like that from the 80s, nice crowd shot of Geoffrey Archer clapping away before he got banged up in jail.

  9. Bill 9

Excellent shit. So we are safe in assuming C&T was another point where Key mislead the NZ public? That he actually got his policy announcements from old Fry and Laurie reruns?

  10. Vinsin 10

oh, bill stop acting like a David Bennington and have a laugh for crying out loud.

  11. Rex Widerstrom 11

    Trade Unionist of the Year.

(An example of the reason I support the principle of unions and collective bargaining but loathe many of the people who run them). Slightly OT I know, sorry.

  12. Tane 12

Rex, any organisation has people who abuse positions of trust. Choosing to break the thread by linking to a story like that from a completely different country makes me wonder what your motivations are.

  13. Rex Widerstrom 13

Just highlighting hypocrisy and cant, Tane. My motivation is to gauge the reaction of primarily left-leaning people to overt corruption, particularly given the all the excusing of Winston that went on (not from you, I know, but from much of the left). I think some people acquitted themselves appalling during that whole affair simply because they allowed expediency to triumph over principle.

So I thought I might try a bit of litmus. And there’s a point about stereotypes in there somewhere, too…

But it’s somewhat off topic, for which I’ve already apologised and do so again.

  14. Quoth the Raven 14

Just highlighting hypocrisy and cant, Tane. My motivation is to gauge the reaction of primarily right-leaning people to overt corruption, particularly given the all the excusing of Hide that went on (not from you, I know, but from much of the right). I think some people acquitted themselves appalling during that whole affair simply because they allowed expediency to triumph purple monkey dishwasher.

So I thought I might try a bit of acid. And there’s a point about pink elephants in there somewhere, too

But it’s somewhat off topic, for which I’ve already apologised and do so again. Terry terry lou and shoes…

Hey I like this:Stephen Fry in The New Statesman (clips)
    Brilliant

  15. Felix 15

Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston.

Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston!

Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston Winston.

Rex has it ever occurred to you that most of us just don’t care?

(Oh and what? A union official from Australia did something what? Jesus you need to take a break)

  16. Vinsin 16

Rex stop acting like a Richard Hollingsworth and come back to us man, we’re over here son.

  17. the sprout 17

Felix, you’ve clearly missed Rex’s point.
An Australian union official acted badly, ‘therefore’ the entire social democratic programme is corrupt. Note of course that this is to be contrasted with a vast majority of neo-liberal governments being war-mongering mass murderers for private financial gain, which in no way reflects on the purity of neo-liberalism.

  18. T-rex 18

    Brilliant.

Is G still around? He never told me he’d been on TV.

Hey G, have you read Nature lately? There’s another guy there who disagrees with you about climate change. Course, his methods were different to yours – he did, like, research and stuff. F*cking hippy.

Also, as I believe this is my first post since the election, so now would be the time for me to congratulate the National party.

    Dear National.

Congratulations on deceiving the electorate, convincing people to vote for something which is bad for them, and putting yourself in a position to shaft the majority of NZ in the manner only you can. Your progressive, forward thinking, ambitious abandonment of initiatives such as the R&D tax rebate are truly visionary.

That Nothing Else Matters vid 08 wire did made me feel a long way from home. To all of NZ, even the 50% dumb enough to vote National – don’t forget what kind of country we want to become as you move forward through the next 3 years of stupidity and regressive policy. It won’t last. Key, enjoy your moment in the spotlight, and for f*cks sake try and rack up ONE thing in your life you can be proud of. ONE thing you can bring up with pride at a dinner party other than “Oh and by the way, did I mention I’m a family man and rather loaded?”.

    Here’s some ideas:

    1. I increased the average level of education in an entire country.
    2. I improved access to healthcare for an entire country.
    3. I reduced the Gini coefficient in a 1st world country.
    4. I increased net wealth of an entire country.
    5. I furthered New Zealands reputation as a country with a moral code that meant sometime.
    6. I made people on the left of the political spectrum slightly less disgusted that I came to power.

    Good luck there champ.

  19. Pascal's bookie 19

    go T-rex, welcome back. lolnui
    Night all.

  20. Savage 20

Why do I even read these threads. Labour lost the election. Kick the cat, slam the door , have a cry.

National didn’t win this election – Labour lost it.

Labour have lost any hold they ever had on the word ‘Liberty”.

This word is now only used by the likes of Rodney Hide and Lindsay Perigo who in my view are complete Nazis.

Sue Bradford should be given a big blue ribbon for the private members bill that she introduced that managed to sway more of the electorate to voting National than any amount of money or campaigning could manage.

Labour don’t really look ready to govern again in a hurry.

I thought it showed Labour’s ranks to be thin when One News asked David Cunliffe if he had any ambitions for leadership. T Rex accuses Key of being a rich twat in a suit with no ideas or purpose, for me that sounds like Mr Cunliffe. What a sad indictment of the party I voted for – asking David Cunliffe if he wanted to be leader.

I don’t think I could vote Labour again.

And all the leftist, reactionary, ad hominem bullshit only confirms my mistake.

  21. Fuck me, word on the street from National supporters around the place is they don’t care that John Key isn’t going to undo any of Labours “social engineering”, they just don’t like being told what to do in the first place.

  22. TimeWarp 22

Yes Killing – I heard a very well-educated, intelligent and experienced academic and businessman mention recently that he chose to vote National because Labour would make him use lightbulbs of inferior brightness. Meanwhile the world could be (is?) going to hell in a handbasket, and the majority of the population – prior to or subsequent to the election – do not care about debating the core issues.

  23. Rex Widerstrom 24

Thanks, Felix, for answering my question.

Richard Hollingsworth, Vinsin? It’s probably because it’s late and I’m tired, but I haven’t a bleedin’ clue what you’re on about 8-/

the sprout… by missing the point yourself, you’ve gone some way toward proving mine. So thanks to you, too. And if you think I’m a neo liberal, you clearly haven’t been paying attention.

  24. F*&cking hell T-rex, LOL

I was just wondering why we hadn’t heard from you.
You must have been stewing on this one for awhile. LOLOLOL.

Way to go and good to have you back.

  25. Savage,

Calling Key a rich twat is a statement of fact not an accusation.

However that is not what T-rex said.

He merely encouraged JK to work on some more substance rather that the bland;” I’m a family man and loaded” mantra on which he has been sold to the Kiwi’s. Not quite the same.

  26. Lukas 27

Calling Key a rich twat is a statement of fact not an accusation

Part of that statement is true, the other is debatable, just like me calling you a useless immigrant that is determined to run down her new homeland.

  27. Tigger 28

Speaking of Young Tories, I saw Simon Bridges running along the waterfront yesterday morning so I checked out his candidate profile – why do so many Tory men pose in pictures with their wives?

  28. Ianmac 29

Just sent the above Tory clip to a relative who is very active in National Party, and changed the sender to appear as from “John Key”.
Subject line: National Party Strategic Review.

  29. jtuckey 30

Tigger – are you trying to make some point ?

  30. insider 31

As a counter to young Tory of the Year we have the “union negotiations” from Not the Nine O’Clock News (you have to go through Belgian eating manners first)

  31. Tigger 32

jtuckey – I asked a question – usually that’s an invitation for people to posit their answers. If you don’t want to answer it then just ignore it.

  32. Shona 33

Tigger, they want us to be assured of their masculine and oh so virile hetero sexuality. U know “see I am not a poof ! so there!” Enjoy your day gentlemen.

  33. Felix 34

Rex perhaps I could be more clear:

I believe you live in Australia. Perhaps this makes Aussie union officials shagging hookers (or whatever that link referred to) interesting to you.

Not to me. I live in NZ and I’m not a union person. I don’t really know how they work or what the hookers do.

I also believe you carry a bit of a grudge for your old mate Winston Peters.

A word in your ear: Just because you really, really, really don’t like him doesn’t mean I have to care one way or the other. I wouldn’t ever vote for him, I’d like to see him get his own TV show where he can interview journalists, and that’s as far as my interest in him goes.

Why you think this proves any point you might have been trying to make (which seems to have been completely lost on everyone but you) or answers any question you imagine you asked is beyond me but Vinsin is absolutely right, you’re behaving like a juvenile Richard Hollingsworth.

You’re going to have to move on, pal. Winston is gone. Have yourself a wee drink to celebrate and get on with your life.

  34. Lucas,

Wow that’s so pathetic. Did you have to wait all that time before you could come up with that one? LOLOLOL

    Ianmac,

    Hilarious

  35. lukas 36

Trav, no. Did you have to wait ages before you thought of calling our Prime Minister to be a twat? Do you even know what a twat is?

[lukas. don’t be xenophobic or you’ll be banned. SP]

  36. Rex Widerstrom 37

    Felix:

Winston isn’t “gone”, nor are his cronies. Much as it may seem otherwise, our politicians exist outside the political sphere. That you “don’t care” that there are still unanswered questions surrounding fisheries, trips to Las Vegas, a small matter of $158,000 and whole pile of manure left behind doesn’t in any way invalidate the need for those matters to be properly investigated and dealt with.

If I’d been old enough to care, I’d have felt the same way about Nixon being pardoned and (ironically) helicoptering his way into wealthy retirement rather than being called to account.

I’ve held positions where I was accountable for public money, and oddly enough never been told that it didn’t matter if I helped myself to a bit provided I resigned (or was sacked) afterwards. I simply think the same standard should apply to our politicians. By admitting you don’t care, you’ve made it plain you don’t. Or is it just politicians who supported the left to whom the exemption applies?

  37. Quoth the Raven 38

Rex – Winston is a right wing conservative. I’ve not heard one lefty here defend him. There’s hardly a comparison to draw between Nixon and Winston. The police cleared him, the SFO cleared him. The electorate didn’t. He’s gone get over it. As to the union shit. Do you expect us to unanimously condemn any corrupt union person? Should I expect righties to unanimously condemn all corrupt corporates (that would take up all their time)? Where do you get off Rex?

  38. lukas 39

[lukas. don’t be xenophobic or you’ll be banned. SP]

I’m not being xenophobic mate. I am arguing the point that Trav calling JK a twat is not a fact, just like me saying that Trav is a useless immigrant is not a fact; both could be argued for and against. I should point out that I do not think that of Trav, from what I have read of her comments, she has made some fairly valuable contribution to NZ, I think she is a tad bitter about Labour being voted out and is on a NZ is a horrible place full of stupid people rant at the moment though.

  39. Rex Widerstrom 40

    QtR asks:

Should I expect righties to unanimously condemn all corrupt corporates

Yes. Ideology should not make you blind to the transgressions of those who happen to share it.

  40. Chris G 41

“I’d like to see him get his own TV show where he can interview journalists, and that’s as far as my interest in him goes.”

haha that is fantastic. I second that.

  41. Quoth the Raven 42

Yes Rex, but there aren’t enough hours in the day to spend condemning every corrupt man.

  42. Rex Widerstrom 43

QtR: Oh quite. Hence my “obsession” with just a handful. I’ll leave the rest to others or I’d never sleep 😀

  43. Felix 44

Rex don’t be such a cock. I’ve never suggested that Winston shouldn’t be investigated, I’m just not emotionally dependent on the outcome.

“there aren’t enough hours in the day to spend condemning every corrupt man.”

Which is why Rex has picked just one.

Sorry Rex but Winston just isn’t very important to most people. Good luck with your crusade.

  44. Ag 45

“Speaking of Young Tories, I saw Simon Bridges running along the waterfront yesterday morning so I checked out his candidate profile – why do so many Tory men pose in pictures with their wives?”

I guess it’s because they’re all closet homosexuals. I thought everyone knew that. Google “The GOP”.

  45. Katipunan 46

T-Rex suggests some ideas for John Key in terms of posting meaningful achievements as PM:

    6. I made people on the left of the political spectrum slightly less disgusted that I came to power.”

    My comments:

    1. How can the PM increase “the average level of education in an entire country”? It’s up to individuals who want to be better educated to make the sacrifices of time and money that lead to this outcome, not to the PM to wave a wand and make wishes come true. And there is such a thing as a useful education cf a useless one. The country needs more research scientists and engineers, not a whole lot of losers with liberal arts degrees who are only equipped to become angy social activists.

    2. What about people taking personal responsibility for their lifestyle choices instead of arrogating the right to socialise the costs of poor decision-making onto others in the community?

    3. What about getting New Zealand back into the top half of the OECD?

    4. See above. The only way one increases the net wealth of a country is by empowering the private sector to create that wealth. Low taxes and less red tape is the recipe here, not bigger government. Governments produce nothing and anything they have to give away comes from soaking the productive members of the community.

    5. Furthered New Zealand’s reputation as a country with a moral code that meant something? You mean like legalising prositution and mainstreaming the unnatural behaviour of sodomites by legitimating civil unions?

    5. We won, you lost, eat that! Bwahahahahahahahaha!

  46. Pascal's bookie 47

    Is that you Michele?

Speaking of Young Tories, I saw Simon Bridges running along the waterfront yesterday morning so I checked out his candidate profile – why do so many Tory men pose in pictures with their wives?”

Perhaps because it’s culturally important to him? If someone has a partner, of whatever gender, who is an integral part of their life why shouldn’t they be proud of that?

I think you’re referring to his webpage he had for the election. There’s no photo of his wife on candidate profile on the national site?

  48. Phil 49

    Pascal,

    Is that you ‘sod?

  49. Pascal's bookie 50

Phil, nope, the ‘sod has lesser spelling mistakes.
