Written By: - Date published: 7:23 am, July 17th, 2010 - 10 comments

Pundit writer and legal academic Andrew Geddis has been doing some important work on electoral law, including contributions to the select committee that is looking at the 2011 referendum on MMP and the reform of campaign funding practices. You should head on over to Pundit and have a look.

McCully backs down – for now

Written By: - Date published: 7:20 am, July 17th, 2010 - 10 comments

Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully says “we don’t need to have winners and losers here” but he has had to bow to the decision of the ARC to keep at least one of the sheds on Queen’s Wharf. While this may appear to be a change to the construction of “Party Central” it is […]

Crash National’s Party – Protest for Fairness at Work

Written By: - Date published: 2:05 pm, July 16th, 2010 - 57 comments

At the National Party conference in Auckland this weekend, John Key is expected to announce drastic attacks on workers’ rights.

You can stand up and fight back against this madness by joining the protest at 10am on Sunday at Sky City Hotel in Auckland.

What’s a university to do?

Written By: - Date published: 11:11 am, July 16th, 2010 - 38 comments

Some people still think of universities as fusty old ivory towers disconnected from the real world. That hasn’t been true for decades. Our current universities and tertiary institutions are business, they are structured and run to maximise their income in whatever funding framing the government of the day has in place. Predictably, the Nats latest proposed sausage machine funding model is a disaster.

Brash blows budget on 2025 taskforce

Written By: - Date published: 9:21 am, July 16th, 2010 - 32 comments

I wonder if Dr Brash thought close scrutiny would have faded once he left the political limelight?  He certainly sounds entirely comfortable with spending the tax taskforce’s entire three-year budget for his meeting fees as chairman in just one year, reported in today’s Dom Post: Dr Brash was paid $1200 a day to chair the […]

The end(s) of journalism

Written By: - Date published: 9:05 am, July 16th, 2010 - 7 comments

Is serious journalism dying? Was it in any good it the first place? What must be done to ensure its survival? These are some of the questions to be tackled at The University of Auckland’s forthcoming Winter Lecture series on “The end(s) of journalism”.

The peer goes potty

Written By: - Date published: 10:57 pm, July 15th, 2010 - 16 comments

At Hot Topic, Gareth has a post on Christopher Monckton attempting to stifle the well-justified criticism of himself . For some reason he seems to think that it is ok for him to criticize working scientists despite having little knowledge of the subjects. However he seems to think they should not be able to analyze or criticize his level of stupid ineptitude.

National’s attack on working Kiwis

Written By: - Date published: 6:56 pm, July 15th, 2010 - 248 comments

With National’s donations flagging something was needed to loosen the purse-strings.

It seems they’ve decided giving business an early present of wage-lowering laws will do the trick.

And every working Kiwi will pay the price.

From the Flicker pages of William Joyce, we have this cogent visual comment on Murray McCully and his diplomatic skills. But the image needs a good caption… 😈

PM punts for growth

Written By: - Date published: 11:39 am, July 15th, 2010 - 16 comments

Prime Minister John Key today conceded that growth remains too weak, unemployment is too high, and that it is unacceptable that workers’ wages are going backwards when he promised they would match Australia’s in just 15 years. Speaking to a rapturous crowd of schoolchildren and journalists, Key announced a bold new economic agenda.

Right to protest up for change

Written By: - Date published: 9:01 am, July 15th, 2010 - 38 comments

RadioNZ is reporting that one of the men who avoided a conviction for his attack on the Waihopai spy base says a proposed law change is aimed at shutting down legitimate protest.

Just who does Business NZ represent?

Written By: - Date published: 7:31 am, July 15th, 2010 - 31 comments

Business New Zealand CEO Phil O’Reilly has come out against Clare Curran’s procurement bill despite the fact procurement legislation would benefit his members.

It makes you wonder just who exactly Business lobby groups represent.

Arming the police

Written By: - Date published: 7:02 am, July 15th, 2010 - 123 comments

In the shadow of recent police shootings we are being presented with the idea of increased police access to firearms as a virtual fait accompli. I’m opposed to the proposal. It won’t make the police any safer, and it will put the public at risk.

Bennett up in flames in Rotorua

Written By: - Date published: 1:49 pm, July 14th, 2010 - 49 comments

The protest rally held in Rotorua, held its slogan high with nearly a hundred people in tow. “Kill the Future Focus Bill, or it will kill you!” was out in front along with cut outs of Paula Bennett, complete with fangs, risque cleavage and that famous leopard skin trenchcoat -all the props of an actor satirising the working class as she attacks us.

NZ Herald tells Collins to reset compass on private prison

Written By: - Date published: 11:51 am, July 14th, 2010 - 29 comments

The NZ Herald editorial criticising National’s pursuit of a private prison in Auckland should make Judith Collins and her cabinet colleagues sit up and rethink.

I was just following the market’s orders

Written By: - Date published: 11:48 am, July 14th, 2010 - 31 comments

Should be no surprise to anyone that the Nats and Maori Party are cutting help for tobacco addicts while upping the cost of their ciggies. They don’t care about better health. Don’t care about helping poor people get off an expensive habit. It’s all about sopping the poor and give aways for the rich. But you know who did grind my gears? Those tabacco execs the other week.

Can we talk about the issues please?

Written By: - Date published: 10:42 am, July 14th, 2010 - 25 comments

Can we pease have some reporting on the actual issues in the super-major race and where the candidates stand? I’m so sick and tired of loading the news-sites to be told who spent what on what (with the implication that there’s all a massive scandal somewhere) or a factual piece reporting on the opinion of some supposed expert on how the candiates are doing as if it’s a horse race.

Buying Kiwi made

Written By: - Date published: 10:39 am, July 14th, 2010 - 24 comments

Clare Curran is preparing a private members bill designed to make sure Kiwi Businesses get preference for government work.

It’s an idea that would see more jobs for Kiwi workers and help strengthen our economy but will business help push the government to back it?

A flower too far?

Written By: - Date published: 9:20 am, July 14th, 2010 - 14 comments

John Banks has put his foot in it again, and his sanctimonious claims about ratepayers’ money are looking ever more hypocritical. But I don’t want to know how much other politicians are spending on flowers, I really don’t care. I think the pendulum has swung too far in terms of examining the minute of the spending of public figures.

The documentary “There Once was an Island: Te Henua e Nnoho” that my partner Lyn Collie has spent her ‘spare’ time producing for the last four years is about to get it screened in New Zealand at the film festivals starting this weekend. This documentary directed by Briar March has won multiple awards at its festival screenings worldwide. I still find it pretty good myself even after having to sit through it many times during post-production. Tickets are selling fast.

Crowdsourcing the deficit

Why let politicians have all the fun? Now the British public can get in on the service slashing action too – via Facebook. The government there has launched a Facebook group to support the Treasury’s “Spending Challenge” – where the public is invited to share their ideas for cutting spending. With the possible exception of […]

Party Central another Key fiasco

Joh Keys Party Central

“Major festival events linked to the 2011 Rugby World Cup could be shifted to Wellington because of Auckland’s party central fiasco, Government sources say.” – Tracy Watkins
Wait, “Auckland’s party central fiasco”? It was John Key who came up with the term, and forced the councils into the Queens Wharf site. But the media are happy to let him wriggle out of responsbility again.

Fat little lapdog

New Zealand hero Pete Bethune isn’t one for mincing his words – now that he’s free to speak them. He’s described the New Zealand Government as a “fat little lapdog” to Japan, eager to roll over and submit to the bullying of any power, no matter how unprincipled its actions, just as long as there’s a promise […]
