Man for all seasons – book review

Written By: - Date published: 8:42 pm, November 7th, 2010 - 23 comments

“Man for all Seasons” is the title of David Grant’s authorised biography of Ken Douglas ONZ. The choice of title puzzled me – “A Man for all Seasons” is the title of Robert Bolt’s award-winning play about Sir (later Saint) Thomas More, whose refusal to endorse Henry VIII’s divorce from Katherine of Aragon led him […]

Nasty Nats Steal Holidays

Written By: - Date published: 5:05 pm, November 7th, 2010 - 38 comments

This NAct government is so anti-worker that they have managed to re-arrange the calendar so that we get 5 fewer holidays in this government’s term than the last Labour one.  And that’s before they sell off our 4th week.

New Left Party?

Written By: - Date published: 11:20 am, November 7th, 2010 - 209 comments

The rumour mill has been buzzing since a couple of commenters here let slip about Matt McCarten’s run in the Mana by-election. Word around the traps is the campaign will be used to launch a new Left Party with McCarten, Hone Harawira, Sue Bradford and others. It’s an exciting possibility.

Trivia: PM’s tiara rivals milk bottle

Written By: - Date published: 10:04 am, November 7th, 2010 - 8 comments

With all the crap this government’s spewing out at the moment, sometimes it pays to take a breath and look at something a bit lighter. Lynn posted a while ago about some of the oddities of the internet, noting how “milk bottle” was one of the most frequent search terms used by visitors to this […]

The Google poll

Written By: - Date published: 7:43 am, November 7th, 2010 - 23 comments

It seems that in American elections there is an almost perfect correspondence between some candidates’ opinion polling and their current search volume on Google.  Can we do away with political opinion polls?  Sounds interesting doesn’t it.  A quick check shows that the relative frequency of searches for “National party” and “Labour party” predicted the result of the 2008 election.  What other tricks can we try?

Managing Addiction

Written By: - Date published: 2:16 pm, November 6th, 2010 - 32 comments

We’ve had numerous prescriptions claiming to tackle ever growing numbers of social ills, but the elephant in the room; the underlying cause for our problems as a society is always, assiduously ignored.  And that means that many of our resources are being wasted (perhaps deliberately) on illusory problems.

Why ‘focusing on growth’?

Written By: - Date published: 1:00 pm, November 6th, 2010 - 21 comments

The title of Don Brash’s latest exercise in making John Key appear moderate second 2025 Taskforce report is “Focusing on Growth”. Why should we be myopically focused on growth? Neoliberalism treats growth as an end in itself. That reduces us to mere cogs in the machine of ‘New Zealand Inc’. A healthy society is more than its GDP growth rate.

Doin’ nothin’: Foreign policy

Written By: - Date published: 11:30 am, November 6th, 2010 - 21 comments

Over at Dimpost, Danyl makes a pertinent observation: “Reiteration that we are ‘very good friends’. Zero development on trade or defense issues. I’m not even sure why she’s here.” There was nothing solid. The ‘Wellington Declaration is, in John Armstrong’s words, featherlight – a big name for less substance than a normal visit. More style over substance.

Neoliberal dominoes

Written By: - Date published: 9:55 am, November 6th, 2010 - 51 comments

According to some, the very definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.  In economic terms the world, and NZ, have been doing the same neoliberal economic agenda over and over for the last 30 years.  It hasn’t worked.  It’s time for a change…

Something rotten in the state of health

Written By: - Date published: 12:58 pm, November 5th, 2010 - 14 comments

Losing one District Health Board Chief Executive, Ken Whelan, who resigned because he refused to carry out any more of National’s cuts to health services looks bad. Losing three of the health systems’ top 22 managers in three months – Whelan, Director General of Health Stephen McKernan, and Auckland DHB CEO Pat Snedden – looks like a purge.

One in ten Kiwis jobless or underemployed

Written By: - Date published: 11:45 am, November 5th, 2010 - 11 comments

At 6.4% unemployment appears to be falling, slowly. But it also looks to be above where it was at the start of the year, when it supposedly plunged to 6.0%. Economists are viewing the wildly fluctuating numbers sceptically. Whatever precisely is happening, with one in ten working age Kiwis unable to get work, it’s not time for dancing in the streets.

eDay – recycle your electronics

You’re reading this on a computer or smartphone / mobile device.  Chances are you’ve been using such gadgets for some time now.  If you’re anything like me you’ve thrown away a few over the years, wasting precious resources and adding to landfill pollution.  Don’t make that mistake again!  Tomorrow, Saturday, is an opportunity to recycle your electronic waste.  To find out more, read on…

Game over Tolley

Written By: - Date published: 7:03 am, November 5th, 2010 - 161 comments

Anne Tolley has lost the debate on national standards.  The boycott looks set to gather strength, and even The Herald has come out against them.  The empirical evidence, academic consensus and weight of professional opinion has always been against standards.  The only ones still defending them are hacks and shills pushing a political agenda.

Where’s the White House invite, John?

Written By: - Date published: 6:09 am, November 5th, 2010 - 38 comments

John Key proved one thing this week. When it comes to international affairs, he’s full of s**t. Despite all his claims about being best buds with Barack Obama, he didn’t even get an invite to meet him from top U.S. diplomat Hillary Clinton. He probably didn’t help future chances either by referring to Hillary as “President Clinton”. You sure are a class act John.

The Wellington Declaration

Written By: - Date published: 3:02 pm, November 4th, 2010 - 22 comments

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived in NZ for a three day visit.  She will sign a declaration representing a formal recognition of the fact that a (post 1984 nuclear free) “thaw” in relationships has been complete since 2007.  Under the convoluted diplomatic language, however, it seems that nothing much will be changing.  But I’m sure Clinton’s visit is going to be a lovely photo-op.

Key hides from real questions

Written By: - Date published: 1:00 pm, November 4th, 2010 - 56 comments

How come John Key called Paul Henry’s racist comments completely unacceptable and Henry was forced to resign but Maurice Williamson’s racism is defended as ‘humour’ by Key and no punishment results? A question you might like to put to the PM. Well, if you try to ask it on Newstalk ZB they’ll let the PM’s staff censor you.

Doing nothin’: The gap with Australia

Written By: - Date published: 12:00 pm, November 4th, 2010 - 24 comments

September Quarter unemployment numbers are out today. It will be an indictment on National if there is not a good sized drop. So how is this government doing on its flagship policy of closing the gap with Australia by 2025? No Right Turn has been trying to find out what work they’re doing to achieve that goal. Answer: Nothing.

Brash’s curate’s egg

Written By: - Date published: 10:28 am, November 4th, 2010 - 24 comments

Don Brash’s latest 2025 Taskforce report will be ignored like the last. Brash tries very hard to scare us into adopting his failed neoliberal agenda but we all know the point of the Taskforce is to make John Key look moderate. That said, Brash’s latest offering is a curate’s egg – nearly all of it foul and rotten but with one partially redeeming section:

National’s Privatisation Agenda Continues

Written By: - Date published: 9:17 am, November 4th, 2010 - 25 comments

National are continuing their privatisation by stealth.  Hospitals services and a new prison are the current targets.  Tony Ryall, Judith Collins and Bill English are the ministers currently pushing their ideology in their respective areas.

Ministers’ housing claims up 17% as rorts continue

Written By: - Date published: 12:22 am, November 4th, 2010 - 48 comments

Weren’t Bill ‘Double Dipton’ English and other  ministers caught rorting the housing allowance system last year? Didn’t the Government revamp the system by giving ministers capped allowances, supposedly to save money and stop rorts? Why then are we, as I predicted, paying more than ever while ministers blatantly rip us off?

US midterms – deflation the risk so be afraid

Written By: - Date published: 8:59 pm, November 3rd, 2010 - 23 comments

As predicted, the US midterms have not gone well for the Democrats, as they have lost control of the House of Representatives. But they retain a majority in the Senate, so some are predicting that the most likely outcome is a repeat of the gridlock of 1994, after a similar conservative revolt led by Rush […]

Stop ECE cuts community meeting – AKL – Thurs 4th Nov

Written By: - Date published: 2:30 pm, November 3rd, 2010 - 4 comments

In both the 2009 and 2010 Budgets this Government has slashed funding for early childhood education, taking over $600M out of the sector.  The cuts are deep, and they are real, and the biggest ones so far took effect on Monday November 1st. This Thursday, the MPs will front up at the Kohia Teachers Centre in Epsom. Get along.

Q&A on The Hobbit – Part 2

Written By: - Date published: 1:30 pm, November 3rd, 2010 - 52 comments

In a highly-charged debate like the Hobbit fiasco, it’s easy to lose sight of the real issue amongst the claims and counter-claims over petty details. In a second post that strips things back to what matters, Blue asks the big question: ‘how exactly did NZ taxpayers end up handing over tens of millions of dollars to Warner Brothers?’

A smoke-free NZ by 2025

Written By: - Date published: 12:52 pm, November 3rd, 2010 - 130 comments

The Maori Affairs select committee has released its report on smoking. It’s great to see politicians setting a really ambitious goal coupled with policies to achieve it. Labour and the Greens are on board, what about National? Well our Do Nothing PM, John ‘ambitious for New Zealand’ Key says it’s too hard. Guess we need a government with some balls.
