   i have to admit i am a little bit jazzed by the idea of the ptb in labour discussing a ubi.

   $350-$400 sounds like a start.

   paid for by a ftt. at around .05%.

   a couple of questions:
   does winnie/nz first support this idea?
   as it is greens policy how hard would it be to get a few of the big cheeses from labour and nz f around a table and come to some agreement on what this could look like?

   and not get stuck in arguing this in purely balance sheet terms.
   its going to stack up economically, but also see it as a wonderful oppurtunity to massively change lifestyle for kiwis.

   It is disgraceful Paul Henry has a job as a journalist.

   ‘Well, catastrophic climate change has made it onto the soundwaves of mainstream television in the form of an interview with the infamous Paul Henry.
   You can see that NIWA scientist Chris Brandolino is more than slightly anxious to get his message out. To be fair Paul hears him out until a certain point where he collapses into nervous laughter and the interview is more or less complete.
   What is really revealing is Paul Henry himself.
   Like Donald Trump in the US Paul Henry is a perfect representation of the average “civilised” New Zealander who would (literally) rather destroy his own nest and die rather than make any changes to his/her lifestyle.
   So is the perfect person to help deliver the message.
   He is ‘Mr. Average’ climate change denier and his response is that that I have encountered time after time after time.’

     That Henry interview is worth watching, both to see the scientist say “is that it then?” to Henry who can’t seem to get past the truth, and to see Henry struggling on live TV with the fact that world is coming to an end.

     Brandolino was great. Wish he’d had more time to underline the point that there are still things we can do.

     (christ, but that set is a dog’s breakfast though. What are those poor people in the background supposed to do?).

       The last part of the interview is interesting, you can tell the scientist felt like he was being treated with contempt.

       Henry’s go to response regarding climate change is that we’re doomed because that’s what he’s being told, so let’s have a little laugh about it. He did exactly the same thing when he interviewed Guy McPherson a couple of years ago. It’s a nice little comedic act that he could pull off with McPherson because he’s seen to be fringe, but with a serious NIWA scientist it doesn’t work.

       Classic Tragedy of the Commons problem we have here.

       So assholes like Paul Henry are just gonna shrug, and keep polluting, because he’s gone from “it’s not happening and it’s not our fault” to “it’s happening and there’s nothing we can do and I’m too small to make a difference” in the blink of an eye.

   Just saw this interesting clip on Germany decomissioning its nuclear power plants and the effect on the economy of the local town. Thank godness we didn’t go down this track.

       Just signed.
       My wife and I had a picnic on Sunday beside a clean little stream up the Awatere Valley. The water sparkled and tinkled and I was remembering all the creeks and rivers that we visited as kids that were just as swimmer friendly. Never knew one back then where we warned off for health reasons.
       Utopia or just a dream?

   Argentina sinks Chinese boat for ‘illegal fishing’

   The navy statement said on Tuesday the boat was intercepted a day earlier off the coast of Puerto Madryn, about 1,460km south of Buenos Aires.

   The statement said the boat did not heed warning calls and instead tried to ram an Argentine naval vessel. Sailors then shot holes in different parts of the fishing boat, causing it to sink, the navy said.

   And we’ll be seeing more of this over time as declining fish stocks hit harder the world over.

   It’s tough being Kiwi Chinese, even after five generations here. We always do wonder why there is the usual scapegoating that comes up every few years or so. Anyone knows why ‘Chinese chefs’ are specifically singled out this time by Labour?
   Gawd, what have we done to deserve such exceptional treatment these days. It wasn’t that long ago when we felt such deep respect & high regard for Helen. Maybe some of us Chinese-sounding names have not been donating to Andrew Little’s & Labour’s fundraising events but have been seen to be giving to the National Party??

     Labour hasn’t targeted Chinese or any foreign chefs. It was a media set-up led by Patrick Gower. In fact, I’m told Andrew Little told the media today that he supported Chinese chefs coming in under the FTA. There’s lots more context here: http://www.labour.org.nz/andrew_little_responds

     to Y G Huang – when Andrew Little was talking about this issue, he specifically said that Chinese have a special place in NZ because of the Free Trade Agreement with China signed by Helen Clark,.

     He also said He, and Labour, are NOT against immigration – in fact NZ has been built on immigration – but it has become out of control, too many too fast coming in all at once, and there needs to be a review of how immigration is handled.

     His words have been misconstrued by the media – as is happening constantly ….. this is a rightwing ploy Mr Huang – please do not be taken in by it, and let your friends know also that Andrew Little is saying sensible things to get NZ back into a good financial state, and that the media and the National Party like to twist his words so it sounds like he’s bigoted or racist. He is neither.

     Also – please note, Mr Huang – this is an open blog and so we are also now getting a whole lot of nasty rightwing trolls here – all looking for an opening to shout down Andrew Little and the Labour Party. The Nats and John Key are afraid of Andrew Little – and so they should be !
