I’d like to know one way or another, as I’ve had to deal with some strange spikes like this in the past and they are tricky to track down.

That is to write code that is as readable, clear, innocent and straightforward as possible, and yet it must fail to perform at its apparent function. To be more specific, it should do something subtly evil. This years winner really takes the cake on that.
