Apologies for the ad on the start of this but what follows is worth seeing. (Hat-tip: Boing Boing) [lprent: removed cbs clip because it seems to be trying to install something on client machines. Replaced with a youtube video. She is an foreign policy idiot.]

Credit where it’s due

Written By: - Date published: 12:13 pm, September 24th, 2008 - 28 comments

I’m usually no fan of Paul Henry as an interviewer but I’m prepared to give credit where it’s due. He certainly didn’t let John Key off the hook this morning on Breakfast. Was tempted to edit it down a bit but it’s worth watching the full thing. HENRY: “Well it’s not going well is it? […]

Under the headline “National MP ‘least prefered’ in own website opinion poll” the Kapiti News reports that Nathan Guy trails Darren Hughes 5% to 95% in his own Facebook poll. Comments on the poll include: I don’t trust Nathan Guy to work properly for all the people of Kapiti and Horowhenua. I’ve heard nothing from […]

No policy?

A reader just sent us the screenshot below with the attached explanation: Thought I should start to read up on some of the content from parties involved – from their own websites of course.  Mainly to educate myself as a voter. National party site – loaded up, but then Firefox tells me the flash script […]

Sideshow

With an almost Winston-esqe turn of phrase Owen Glenn has labelled Labour Party president Mike Williams an “unmitigated falsifier of veracity”. Yet Glen himself has claimed that he was offered a cabinet post (cough), that he donated money to Labour because of the Exclusive Brethren’s involvement in National’s campaign (timing doesn’t work), that Labour Party President […]

An astute reader just sent us this – they spotted Ashcroft’s jet parked at Lyall Bay on Saturday August 30 and managed to snap a quick pic. The photo below is from TV3’s coverage. Looks like the same plane.

Key: “I just followed what was in my diary”

Written By: - Date published: 11:26 am, September 2nd, 2008 - 38 comments

TV3 revealed last night that John Key has recently met with billionaire Tory donor Lord Michael Ashcroft. Lord Ashcroft clearly preferred that the meeting be kept secret and only a glimpse of him was caught as he departed Auckland airport in his private jet.  Garner: “Has anyone in the National Party met Lord Ashcroft in […]

Franks: “grumpy Christians and whining gays”

Written By: - Date published: 3:16 pm, August 29th, 2008 - 58 comments

Here’s National’s Wellington Central candidate Stephen Franks giving his view on Civil Unions. I’m not even really sure what to say about it. It might just be best to let Stephen Franks speak for himself…

Cullen on Nat apologies

Say what you will about his politics, you can’t beat Cullen for wit. Here he is on the similarities between Labour and National following Williamson’s enthusiastic statements of National policy:  The full clip is here. Listen to Key plead to his caucus, and listen what he’s pleading for them to do – “If National wants to win an […]

Greens back emissions trading scheme

Written By: - Date published: 5:08 pm, August 26th, 2008 - 48 comments

The Greens have decided to back the government’s emissions trading scheme saying in a press release that it’s a start but there’s more to do: We reported on Thursday that we had achieved virtually nothing in two areas – agriculture, and protection of important biodiversity from pine plantings. We have now made some progress on […]

Here’s TV3’s coverage from last night. They’ve just completed a poll in which 45.7% of those surveyed think National has a secret agenda.

Policy by focus group

Colin Espiner on the Nats’ energy policy: …National’s energy policy is conservative and lacking in new ideas… What it has delivered is a short-term, pragmatic policy lacking in vision. But unlike Labour, it is probably a policy in step with current public opinion. Maybe these kinds of flaccid policy statements are inevitable when you: (a) painstakingly sterilise […]

The Standard turns one

Today’s our first birthday. A year ago I had the privilege of the first post. It was on John Key’s contradictory statements about whether or not he wanted New Zealand troops sent to Iraq. The video’s below. Since then there have been another 1440 posts. Over the course of the day I imagine that some […]

Giving with one hand, taking with the other

Written By: - Date published: 11:49 am, August 10th, 2008 - 30 comments

I’ve gotta admit feeling a little bit sorry for Key over the story of his offer to donate “a good part” of his PM’s salary – should he win – to charity. One of those cases of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Crosby/Textor would be rightly concerned about the potential downside of […]

Semantics

Written By: - Date published: 11:29 am, August 10th, 2008 - 17 comments

The SST reports that English says that he will “never” challenge Key for the leadership. Yet I’m told that over the past couple of years, even to some in the press gallery, English hasn’t made a secret of his future leadership ambitions around Parliament. Makes you wonder what else his faction has on Key.

Quote of the week

Maybe we should take submissions in the comments but my vote’s with Michael Cullen’s assertion from the House yesterday that the leaked tapes represent: an unorchestrated litany of truth. Classic.

Here’s Close Up from last and Mike Hosking giving John Key an absolute bollocking. Key tries to run Crosby Textor’s new lines: “dirty tricks campaign” and “entrapment”. Hosking doesn’t give him an inch. Definitely worth a watch – if you’re in a hurry fast forward to about the 2:50 mark… UPDATE: commenters have asked for […]

The National Party Old Boys’ Club

Written By: - Date published: 10:45 am, August 7th, 2008 - 17 comments

Tane’s made the point before but it’s worth making again: National may have a new frontman but at its core is largely unchanged – and since being ousted nearly a decade ago, members of the National Party Old Boys’ Club have been plotting their return to power. Political reporter Dene Mackenzie notes today in the […]

Déjà vu

Written By: - Date published: 10:58 am, August 6th, 2008 - 6 comments

If you didn’t already have enough doubts about whether to trust John Key, Bill English and Lockwood Smith by virtue of the recent revelations here’s another one to ponder. A promise to resign over future policy isn’t new territory for the Nats. Neither is failing to keep it (click image for larger version).
