A moan at 3 News

Written By: - Date published: 2:40 pm, May 10th, 2012 - 11 comments

Hey 3 News –  I know there’s a lot of pressure to churn stuff out and so on.  But, even so, surely you can do better than this.

Filleted Murdock

Written By: - Date published: 4:46 pm, April 27th, 2012 - 37 comments

Stayed up last night to watch Robert Jay QC question Rupert Murdoch at the Leveson enquiry. It was riveting – you can see why top lawyers like Jay are called silks. Murdoch denied, deferred, demeaned, derided and defended but couldn’t help himself – ended up with more damage than control. This affair has more legs than a millipede.

A fair go for advertisers only

Written By: - Date published: 12:16 pm, March 2nd, 2012 - 16 comments

National’s New Zealand becomes a scarier place by the day. Clare Curran has revealed that TVNZ ordered Fair Go staff to bear the interests of advertisers in mind when making their stories. Well, there goes the reputation of the gold standard in New Zealand TV. This is what you get from a government that has […]

Eat your fast-food and don’t think

National’s man in NZ on Air, John Key’s electorate chairman Stephen McElrea, was terribly worried about New Zealanders seeing a documentary about child poverty before the election. Informative TV has no place being funded with the public purse in National’s New Zealand. But no such objection to $1.6 million for New Zealand’s Got Talent. It’s the perfect pap to distract the masses.

Debate tonight – smartphone worm app

Written By: - Date published: 8:29 am, November 21st, 2011 - 101 comments

Tonight is the TV3 Goff-Key leaders’ debate 7pm – 8:30pm. Remember “the worm”? It’s back.  And (in a move that is a gift to National’s demographic) this time it’s packing a smartphone.  Here’s how to get the app if you want to take part.

Ambrose to sue Key for defamation

Written By: - Date published: 9:18 pm, November 19th, 2011 - 107 comments

Bradley Ambrose, the cameraman widely maligned by John Key and his pudgey lapdogs David Farrar and Cameron Slater for daring to hold the PM to some basic standards of accountability, is demanding an apology from John Key or he’ll take the PM to court for defamation.

UPDATE: The final week of the campaign will kick off with a police raid on the Herald Monday morning.

Key loses plot under election pressure

Written By: - Date published: 8:23 am, November 18th, 2011 - 64 comments

John Key has a history of choking under pressure but this time, calling on the police to raid the premises of our national broadcasters TVNZ and RNZ, and our major privately owned newspapers – he’s cracked under the pressure of the campaign and the spectre of losing it all. There’ll be no knighthood if Key becomes the first National PM to lose after just one term.

National Election agenda setting fail

Written By: - Date published: 12:27 pm, November 17th, 2011 - 7 comments

This is just from one news outlet. Stuff, the Herald, RNZ, TVNZ – they’re all focussing on what’s making Key looking like a fool. They aren’t interested in hearing what National has to say about anything until they fess up. Nine days from an Election, now that’s a spectacular agenda setting fail. Who’s advising Key’s campaign, Melissa Lee?

Do you want a say in public broadcasting?

Written By: - Date published: 3:09 pm, November 1st, 2011 - 45 comments

Public service broadcasting is dying in NZ, and that’s not good enough.  Labour’s newly released broadcasting policy promises to preserve it, with the future of the system to be shaped by public debate.

More opening addresses

Opening addresses from the remaining parties screen on TV1 starting at 7:30pm. Should be good fun for political junkies, make sure you tune in…

Labour Opening Address

Amazing. Brilliant. I’ve seen a lot of political television, and that would have to be the best piece of contemporary political television by a political party I can remember. Could not have been better. National utterly trounced.

TV1 at 7:50 – Opening Address

Written By: - Date published: 4:58 pm, October 28th, 2011 - 67 comments

Labour’s election Opening Address will be broadcast on TV1 at 7:50pm tonight.  Labour is hinting that the address will be something different, and unlike anything we have seen before.  Given their gutsy campaigning so far, anything could happen!  Make sure you tune in…

Goff impressive in Native Affairs debate

Written By: - Date published: 11:05 pm, October 24th, 2011 - 22 comments

The first leaders debate took place on Native Affairs tonight. Key and Goff were interviewed by Julian Wilcox. Key was lacklustre – if New Zealanders were  finding it tough to make ends meet it was all down to global circumstance, nothing to do with him. Goff by contrast was impressive – blew that argument apart with the observation that it was the choices Key’s government made inside New Zealand that mattered. One could see why Key does not like being face to face with an incisive interviewer. Another broken promise

Written By: - Date published: 2:01 pm, October 20th, 2011 - 43 comments

Remember how John Key was busy on the day of the double downgrade. Hosting his *wink* not election ad *wink* on RadioLive? Remember how he promised to “talk to someone important” to stop Coro St being moved to 5:30? Yeah. Another broken promise. Can’t even keep his lame promises now. Let alone the important ones.

3News lynch mob

Did Hone Harawira call for Steven Joyce to be hanged?  Ahh – no.  Someone at 3News needs to switch to decaf.

Update: 3News – who are very responsive with this sort of problem – have tidied up their reporting of this issue.  Bravo.

Sky buy coming up?

Written By: - Date published: 2:59 pm, August 12th, 2011 - 8 comments

42% Murdoch-owned Sky could be in the market to buy debt-laden TV3 according to John Drinnan in today’s Business Herald. Drinnan says that “Sky owning Mediaworks opens up a myriad of issues, not least the degree that the Government would continue to back the growth of Sky TV’s monopoly and its extension into radio.” Amen to that. SkyTV’s chief John Fellett says he has no interest in another television channel. That may not be Rupert’s view. Monopoly TV revenue streams are his bread and butter. News for him is “entertainment”.

Climate of Deception at Fox News

Written By: - Date published: 11:42 am, July 22nd, 2011 - 98 comments

It has been long known that the name “Fox News” should really be known as “Faux News” because it doesn’t believe in reporting reality. It just makes crap up and spins everything to avoid dealing with reality. This video looks at their performance on climate change.

Paula Bennett – Out Of Touch

Written By: - Date published: 4:04 pm, April 27th, 2011 - 21 comments

“Make The Politician Work” is a new “reality” series from TVNZ, with its first episode on Easter Sunday. I don’t particularly like the premise, as the vast majority of our politicians work very hard.  But despite that, and the shonky reality stylings, the first episode with Paula Bennett was most enlightening. Bennett, about to help […]

Without ambition…

A classic cover with updated lyrics of the 1980’s classic. Now we have “We have no ambition for New Zealand”. Give a big hand to the artists and start asking the radio stations and TV channels when they will be playing it.

Now we know what John Key was so depressed about in this image?

Key caught in MediaWorks lie

Written By: - Date published: 9:18 am, April 9th, 2011 - 85 comments

Following the release of OIA documentation and questioning in the House, John Key has recanted his earlier statement that he hadn’t met with MediaWork’s Brent Impey to discuss a $43 million Government loan. The PM has now admitted that he did indeed meet with the head of Steven Joyce’s former company MediaWorks, which owns TV3, TV4, […]

Clipshow – Paul Henry: we all pay for his unending bigotry

The Sprout led our coverage of the Paul Henry scandal, writing the first post after the prick’s attack on Anand Satyanand and the one on his resignation. The Sprout also first brought to public attention Henry’s racist attack on Sheila Dikshit, which became an international incident and caused Henry’s downfall. Here’s how it started.

Stupid news makes you stupid shocker

Several studies have now shown that those who watch Fox News are significantly more misinformed than those who don’t.  Well there’s a surprise!  Not.  Serious question though, can we have both a free media and a requirement for minimum levels of accuracy and balance, or are those options mutually exclusive?

The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
