A healthy dose of reality on prisons

Written By: - Date published: 12:37 pm, March 30th, 2009 - 10 comments

Peter Williams QC was on Breakfast this morning giving a refreshingly frank assessment of the problems with our prison and justice systems – specifically how *not* to solve them: Our prisons are a complete and absolute disgrace but they’re not going to be helped by privatisiation. Worth watching.

Update: Shepard Fairey v AP

Written By: - Date published: 2:48 pm, March 27th, 2009 - Comments Off on Update: Shepard Fairey v AP

Over at his site Shepard Fairey, the creater of the Obama “HOPE” poster, has an update on his legal wrangle with the Associated Press. I’m sure a lot of people are wondering about my case with the AP over the Obama HOPE poster. I can’t talk about every aspect of the case, but there are […]

Lord Ashcroft woz here

Written By: - Date published: 4:33 pm, March 25th, 2009 - 17 comments

Boing Boing reports that: The London police have bested their own impressive record for insane and stupid anti-terrorism posters with a new range of signs advising Londoners to go through each others’ trash-bins looking for “suspicious” chemical bottles, and to report on one another for “studying CCTV cameras.” It’s hard to imagine a worse, more […]

Trans-Tasman says Clark to head UNDP

Written By: - Date published: 10:47 am, March 25th, 2009 - 55 comments

From The Herald: Former Prime Minister Helen Clark will be named today as head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a report says. Political newsletter Trans-Tasman reported the appointment today, though a spokesman for Miss Clark, prime minister from 1999 until 2008, would not comment.

National gives animal rights the chop

Written By: - Date published: 12:43 pm, March 24th, 2009 - 34 comments

Looks like National has more than workers’ rights on the chopping block. Animal rights activists are up in arms at Agriculture Minister David Carter’s plan to scrap the six-year moratorium on live sheep exports. Live sheep exports were stopped in 2004 after 5000 sheep died on an Australian ship bound for Saudi Arabia. Any one else […]

The tiniest rolling maul in the world

Written By: - Date published: 10:08 pm, March 22nd, 2009 - 18 comments

So the pressure is building for National to get specific about it’s plans for fighting the recession. Therese Arseneau complained on Q+A today that Key has “no action plan”. Even Phil O’Reilly from Business New Zealand seemed to agree there wasn’t a clear plan. After all the money spent on National’s ‘Jobs Summit’ the extent […]

Cycleway updates on Campbell Live

Written By: - Date published: 11:11 am, March 19th, 2009 - 28 comments

Another reason to watch Campbell Live: cycleway updates. John Campbell announced last night he’d be doing regular (nightly?) updates on the number of jobs created by the cycleway and how many kilometers of it have been built. The top to bottom national cycleway is one of Key’s highest profile initiatives for fighting the conomic downturn […]

Tapu Misa on private prisons

Written By: - Date published: 12:14 pm, March 17th, 2009 - 32 comments

From Tapu Misa’s latest column: National thinks that… [t]hrough the magic of “competition” we’ll get a first rate penal system, and private providers will make a profit without our having to spend any more money. Given the lack of strong evidence for this proposition, this seems to be based squarely on faith and ideology. But […]

DL Wellington tomorrow

Written By: - Date published: 11:12 am, March 11th, 2009 - 1 comment

Just received this from the Wellington Drinking Liberalites: Just a last minute reminder, tomorrow is the third Drinking Liberally of 2009, featuring the new Green MP, Kevin Hague. Kevin was formerly the Chief Executive of the West Coast District Health Board and has served as the Executive Director of the NZ AIDS Foundation. He’ll be […]

Ye olde royal titles

Written By: - Date published: 9:57 am, March 11th, 2009 - 28 comments

Brian Rudman has a good piece this morning on the Earl of Auckland’s backwards-looking decision to reinstate a “ridiculous regime of titles dating back to feudal times”. The best quote’s from Sister Pauline (herself a Distinguished Companion of the NZ Order of Merit): I can’t believe the Government is tinkering around with this kind of thing […]

National’s newspeak

Written By: - Date published: 10:57 am, March 5th, 2009 - 15 comments

When he’s not hard at work protecting the profits of tobacco giants by helping them peddle smokes to your kids, Ryall’s having a go at his own version of Newspeak. Stuff reports that there’s a list of banned words currently circulating in the Health Ministry. The list includes “public health, social change, inequalities and advocacy”. […]

National’s ambition for your kids: a pie and a fag

Written By: - Date published: 8:09 pm, March 4th, 2009 - 44 comments

Last month Anne Tolley ditched the requirement that schools sell healthy food to kids. Not to be outdone, minister for tobacco Tony Ryall now wants to make cigarettes more accessible to them too. Ryall has rejected the health select committee recommendation that cigarettes and tobacco be kept out of sight in shops, choosing to favour […]

Running the lines

Written By: - Date published: 10:01 am, March 2nd, 2009 - 2 comments

No surprise to see The Herald editorial still running National’s lines. Now that Key’s equivocating on National’s planned tax cuts Granny’s right in behind him – despite their previous convictions. From October last year, an editorial from The Herald titled Overdue, but tax cuts timely: If [the tax cuts are] viewed widely as overdue and […]

Good Copy Bad Copy (repost)

I posted on this in the early days of The Standard but now might be a good time to check it out if you haven’t seen it already – the copyright, piracy, free culture documentary “Good Copy Bad Copy”. You can (legally) download the hi res version from bittorrent here – if you do, consider […]

Once bitten

After his gaffe last time Key’s made a point of openly announcing his next meeting with the Tories’ deputy chairman, strategist and largest donor, Lord Ashcroft. A company controlled by the billionaire is currently being investigated back in the UK for possible breaches electoral law relating to its political donations. Key insists that Ashcroft hasn’t […]

Actions speak louder than words

Written By: - Date published: 10:53 am, February 20th, 2009 - 51 comments

Remember this infamous PowerPoint presentation from National’s 2005 campaign? Remember the Nats’ vote-winning strategy of targeting female voters as outlined in The Hollow Men? Remember Key’s answer to Investigate Magazine: Investigate: In terms of the votes that you’re out to capture by 2008, who are you after, what is your target market? Key: It’s got […]

Fueling the PR machine ain’t cheap

Written By: - Date published: 2:53 pm, February 17th, 2009 - 13 comments

Just like petrol prices, the cost of fueling National’s PR machine is on the rise. Tracy Watkins reports that “National has employed 18 press secretaries on salaries of $100,000 or more.  Seven are employed in the $10,000 band below $100,000”. In the past Winston dubbed the National Party PR machine “The ministry of National affairs”. No […]

Ralston on Ryall

Written By: - Date published: 11:32 am, February 12th, 2009 - 22 comments

Ralston’s latest column – Ryall’s disabled thinking – covers Tony Ryall’s decision to ignore a select committee recommendation that National set up a Disabilities Commission, asking: Why did he [Ryall] ignore the fact that National’s own MPs were on the select committee that agreed a commission was necessary? Why did he think the mountain of submissions to […]

Trying to live on 500K/yr in NYC

Written By: - Date published: 4:15 pm, February 9th, 2009 - 9 comments

President Obama wants to set US$500,000 as the top pay for banking executives whose firms accept government bailout money. From Boing-Boing: The lead story in today’s New York Times Styles section is all about the tremendous difficulties that executives at bankrupt companies receiving public bailouts will face if their salaries are capped at only $500,000. For example, […]

Half truths

Written By: - Date published: 12:36 pm, February 5th, 2009 - 10 comments

Across the Tasman Kevin Rudd has announced a huge recovery package. Here at home, National is merely tinkering around the edges. Key’s standard response to this criticism is that ‘his’ package puts us amongst the top few countries in the world in terms of spend to GDP. Someone needs to ask him how much of […]

I hope so too

Written By: - Date published: 7:13 pm, January 18th, 2009 - 22 comments

Here’s a cool interactive feature from the NYT – “I hope so too”:  The New York Times asked more than 200 people in 14 states (half red, half blue) to identify their greatest hopes for what Barack Obama might accomplish during his time as president. Their answers do not represent any kind of scientific sample—they […]
