Some people have suggested that the more progressive parliamentary elements of the left are done and dusted. I’m not so sure…

left wing leadership candidate Jeremy Corbyn well ahead

Hard lefty Jeremy Corbyn has a 22 pt lead in the UK Labour leadership race. The Labour Party Blairites are definitely not happy.

ABC: The Lexicon of Labour

In a major shock, it appears veteren socialist Jeremy Corbyn is set to win the leadership of the UK Labour Party. Can his anti-austerity platform lift Labour up following their drubbing at the general Election? And can his ideas impact on our Labour Party here?

In Mhairi Black’s maiden speech she talked about signpost politicians whose principles are clear and weathercock politicians whose principles shift with the breeze.

The youngest MP in the United Kingdom, the SNP’s Mhairi Black, recently gave her maiden speech in Parliament.  Recommended viewing for some good old fashioned from the heart leftist speech.

Massive anti-austerity marches have just ended all over Britain. Tens of thousands of protesters have turned out to let the Tory government know that the fight against the right has not ended with the general election. Welsh singer Charlotte Church told the crowd in London that she is proudly British, but for all the right reasons.

The third way according to Tony Blair

Supporters of Tony Blair’s third way and the need for Labour to be aspirational should reflect on recent reports of his huge wealth earned with taxpayer support while he has been engaged on official business.

Is this progress?

Richard Harman has broken a story about the formation of a Blairite third way think tank within the Labour Party.  Those involved include Stuart Nash, Phil Quin, Josie Pagani and Nick Legget.

Conservatives and Human Rights

In Australia a recent attempt by Abbott and some supporters to give the Minister of Immigration the power to cancel an Australian’s citizenship status was met by a cabinet revolt.  In England there is talk of the UK withdrawing from the European Convention of Human Rights.  So much for the Conservative commitment to the rule of law.

Elections in the Anglosphere

An excellent summary reposted with permission from Dim-Post. “Seems to me that one of Labour’s biggest problems – both here and in the UK – is that they’re faced with an opponent that is (a) better resourced than them and (b) uses those resources to make themselves far, far better at politics than their left-wing opponents.”

There’s a major and rather obvious contributory factor to UK Labour’s failure in the UK general election that doesn’t seem to have drawn any comment. Until now…

Same sh*t different election

The English Election campaign and the results felt like a rerun of the New Zealand 2014 election campaign.  Slick Crosby Textor designed attacks on Labour’s stability and on the leader and an imbalance of resources contributed to the result in both cases.  How does the left counter this?

UK Election; the lessons.

Like a punch drunk boxer, the pollsters didn’t see it coming. Three leaders could be writing their resignation letters over night. David Cameron is pinching himself at how easy it all turned out. And Scotland had another referendum.

Some brief thoughts on the UK Election and what can be learned.

Update: Ed Miliband resigns. Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage have also quit.

UPDATE: Exit Poll suggests Tory win, Lib Dem’s smashed. SNP dominate in Scotland, Greens may win 2 seats. UKIP stuffed, Farage to lose in his seat. Labour still a possibility to govern.

UPDATE 2:  Rumours that both Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg will resign in the morning. George Galloway loses his seat, UKIP have flopped and it appears Nigel Farage will not be an MP. However, Tory win not yet confirmed.

The UK votes tomorrow. A hung Parliament is predicted, and the UK enters uncharted warters, guided only by a cabinet manual. Will Cameron dig in at No. 10?

The British Election

Britain is just over a month away from an election that looks like it will go down to the wire. And the recent leaders’ debate has displayed some very impressive leaders of progressive minor parties who may hold the balance of power after the election has been completed.  In particular Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon may be able to determine who the next Prime Minister will be.

The War Club Family

There’s a fascinating article in the latest New Statesman titled “An Empire that speaks English: the right’s dream of a new world order.” Suddenly UK Foreign Minister Philip Hammond’s recent visit here makes sense. So does John Key’s references to sending troops to Iraq on behalf of the “club” or the “family” – he’s at the heart of the Empire.
