President Mujica? Sounds like an OK sort of guy.
By "taking money out of the system" you effectively lower people's wages. So by raising the minimum wage but also raising taxes at the same time people are no better off. They are effectively being told to hand over their pay increase because the ...
Get your facts right. If you're referring to the three strikes law, it refers to recidivist offenders committing serious crimes and being locked away for the benefit of the law-abiding rest of us. Libertarians believe running a justice system is a valid ...
I note you didn't offer any argument against Seymour's points, just an ad hominem attack on Gosman. Surely you can do better than that.
Seymour objected to the Orwellian 'tax is love' slogan. Tax is violence, it's not voluntary, and it's arbitrary - it can be ratcheted up to whatever level the politicians want, right up to 100% and beyond. The "social contract" is a statist myth which aims...
Unfortunately Adam, we all have to work - or someone is forced to work on our behalf - or we starve. So we all live under the 'tyranny of hunger'. Having to choose between working or starving is not a breach of anyone's freedom. Entering into voluntary ...
Any particular reason for not politicising this episode of harassment/assault?
Whaleoil hasn't been quiet about it. He points the finger squarely at two time loser Bill as provider of information for the attempted hit job on Bishop.
Banks - good God, no!
Agreed, total cleanup of the stables needed, get rid of the wets.
Good riddance to a bludging career politician parasite... English is a good argument for term limits on MPs... 27 years gobbling at the trough is disgusting. Hopefully the Nats will show some spine and elect Crusher as replacement.
So: 1) It's not OK to jet around the world burning up fossil fuel - except when you're Al Gore of course 2) Working harder isn't a good thing, it's neoliberal 3) Being multilingual is neoliberal 4) Federer's a high earner, so is George Soros - does that ...
You'd rather the workers in Vietnam were out of a job, Macro? And what about the laptop from which you sent your post? Are you certain that wasn't put together in a sweat shop?
Mustn't criticise the Greens.
The Jerusalem Embassy Act was signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1995, passed in the U.S. Senate by 93 votes to 5. All Trump has done is act in accordance with the will of Congress, which his predecessors lacked the spine to do. It was meant to be actioned...
I thought Labour was against work for the dole schemes? It seems a very “National” approach to things, which is surprising.
To Garibaldi @ 6:43 “Dirty Politics” ended up being a non-event as Joe/Jane public got sick & bored of the MSM ramming it down people’s throats 24/7. Add the Fat German to the mix and all it achieved was to shake complacent Nats to the polls securing ...
“Key never had it as bad as Ardern has it now” You reckon? Key was getting it with both barrels with the “Dirty Politics” non-event. Key’s self-inflicted stupidity with his hair pulling episode also saw some serious heat. Arderns ride has been gentle at ...
Seriously?! The media were on crusade to get National at the end. It was a never ending series of “got ya” attempts. I am seeing a parallel with Key and Ardern. Both started off as media darlings. The media loved Key at the beginning but turned on him in ...
The media ceases to be your friend when you’re in government. This is only the start of the media fun and games. BM is right, a better strategy is needed than just crying wolf about “Dirty Politics”.
This is turning out to be a good deal. The US (and their dodgy practices) are out, and so are houses now they’re classed as “strategic”. Well done Labour! They know the value of trade when push comes to shove.
Go for it then, guys! Everybody here take a Manus Island refugee into your home and act as a sponsor for them until they have been taxpaying New Zealanders for a year.
Kiwiblog tends to have a "looser" standard of moderation and is quite boring on the whole. Best reader commentary is TS and WO, though Staters views on things can be "unique"
There is of course some wailing and gnashing of teeth but on the whole I reckon there is ambivalence. A lot of Nat supporters I know (I'm one as well) are actually quite pleased we're not with Winston. The feeling is that NZF will be below the 5% mark next...
I reckon the big winner in all of this is the Greens. NZF has proven to be a poison chalice in the past and is likely to do so again by primarily poisoning Labour.
I feel that the 5% is too high. I'd reduce it to a 1% threshold and just have a 100 list seat parliament. Not sure on the stability but it would certainly be representative.
Peters is a poisoned chalice and stuffs up whoever he goes into coalition with. National will crash and burn by the time of the next election should they pair up.
People these days tend to focus all their efforts on their own patch rather than worry about the neighbours over the fence.
Aye blossom, I be Scottish with cuzzie bro for good measure. In the words of Billy T, half of me wants to get drunk and the other half doesn't want to pay for it 🙂. Yes I'm glad they're leaving high bracket income tax alone. I pay enough tax in this ...
I see Labour has announced income tax will be left alone. This can only be a good thing and will make them more electable.
They still have Andrew Little signs by the Remurea Golf course. Cannot see those being a priority as the area isn't exactly a Labour swing state 😊
