Poverty Watch 34

Written By: - Date published: 1:01 pm, June 8th, 2013 - 5 comments

Welcome to Poverty Watch, a weekly update on National’s lack of response to the urgent and growing issue of poverty in NZ. This week we take a detailed look at the government’s response to the report on poverty from the Office of the Children’s Commissioner. The media reaction summarised last week is correct – the government response is a joke.

Gone

Having resigned as Minister, how long before we see a by-election in Ohariu as Peter Dunne’s credibility keeps dripping away? And will we see an early election?

And the leaker is…

Peter Dunne – still denying it but cannot be ruled out.

Update: Breaking news – Peter Dunne has resigned as a minister.

Weekend social 07/06/2013

Written By: - Date published: 2:00 pm, June 7th, 2013 - 9 comments

Weekend social is for non political chat. What’s on for the weekend, gigs, film or book reviews, sports, or whatever. No politics, no aggro, why can’t we all just get along?

NSA pwns the internet

Written By: - Date published: 11:03 am, June 7th, 2013 - 74 comments

The NSA has direct access to servers at Google, Apple, Facebook, and other Internet giants, and they collect pretty much whatever data they like. We shouldn’t be surprised. The Guardian has the story.

Key Muldoon

Written By: - Date published: 8:41 am, June 7th, 2013 - 45 comments

Outrage over the Key Muldoon comparison? We thinks they doth protest too much. Not only is John Key a big fan of Muldoon, but his list of personal attacks and constitutional shenanigans has already grown more than long enough to challenge the old master.

Special pleading from the Electricity Authority

Written By: - Date published: 10:17 pm, June 6th, 2013 - 36 comments

Dr Brent Layton of the Electricity Authority has produced a 28-page paper to refute the claims of Molly Melhuish, Dr Geoff Bertram and Bryan Leyland that “the Authority’s approach is a light-touch approach to regulating the electricity markets.” Layton says that forcing prices and asset values down will have a “chilling” effect on  fearful investors.  The ‘”chilling” metaphor is particularly inapt when used to defend wealth transfers from the poor to the rich.

You can be a leader of nothing!

Well it turns out I was wrong – you can be a leader of nothing! Chaos in Parliament at the Speaker’s ruling.

Campaign heroics or hubris?

Written By: - Date published: 12:02 pm, June 6th, 2013 - 38 comments

I was impressed by this press statement from the Mana Party on the ground in the Ikaroa Rawhiti by-election reporting that they door-knocked over 1000 houses over the weekend and found that support for their candidate was over 70%.  As a political campaigner of many years experience, and I’m now running Labour’s by-election HQ in […]

The policing of women’s bodies

Written By: - Date published: 10:00 am, June 6th, 2013 - 116 comments

(Socialist) feminism seems to be on the rise internationally, exposing how threats to “old boys” corporate-aligned power are countered by policing women’s bodies. Sue Bradford highlights the contradiction between Owen Glenn’s paternalistic corporate capitalism and the feminist-aligned participants in his Inquiry. Jan Logie addresses the gender pay gap.

Slums for Auckland?

Housing Minister Nick Smith had ominous words for Auckland. Hands up all you Aucklanders who are keen to sacrifice quality housing?

You can’t be a leader of nothing

Written By: - Date published: 8:50 am, June 6th, 2013 - 19 comments

Peter Dunne’s status as a party leader in Parliament (i.e. funding and perks) is under threat. Seems pretty cut and dried – you can’t be a leader of nothing. Being a sensible type, I’m sure that Peter will agree.

Ode to Phil Twyford

Written By: - Date published: 6:08 am, June 6th, 2013 - 24 comments

I was impressed by Phil Twyford’s analysis of the Government’s housing policies announced in the budget. I thought his best point was that only this Government could announce a housing affordability policy with the eviction of 3000 state housing tenants as its centre piece!

OECD report leans left

Written By: - Date published: 11:56 am, June 5th, 2013 - 24 comments

Bill English reviews the economy

Both sides of the political spectrum will draw some comfort from the recent OECD report on our economy, but overall the report is much better aligned with Labour / Green policy.

So, who’s up for buying some shares in Meridian?

Written By: - Date published: 8:59 am, June 5th, 2013 - 40 comments

Mighty River closed at a new low of $2.36 yesterday. Here’s English on the likely take up of the sale of Meridian: “We would expect that it will give New Zealanders the opportunity to invest in a large New Zealand company, and tens of thousands of them are likely to do so.” Tens of thousands. For reference, they expected 250,000 investors in Mighty River but only 113,000 showed up.

Old Boys Club

Charter schools have no future

NZ Power verdict is in

Written By: - Date published: 7:09 am, June 5th, 2013 - 108 comments

The polls are in.  Despite an unprecendented assault by the capitalist forces to protect the profits of the electricity companies, the people want change, they want lower power prices. A TVNZ poll shows 57% of people support for the Labour/Green NZ Power plan, while the TV3 poll shows 54% support. So, keep on howling, Righties. Keep putting profit before people.

Fairness and freedom

Written By: - Date published: 12:49 pm, June 4th, 2013 - 51 comments

If the left had to pick one word to describe the essence of its political philosophy, that word might be “fairness”. If the right had to do the same that word might be “freedom”. Labour MP David Clark considers the balance.
