The Standard turns one

Written By: - Date published: 8:31 am, August 15th, 2008 - 26 comments

Today’s our first birthday. A year ago I had the privilege of the first post. It was on John Key’s contradictory statements about whether or not he wanted New Zealand troops sent to Iraq. The video’s below. Since then there have been another 1440 posts. Over the course of the day I imagine that some […]

Honeymoon. Over.

Written By: - Date published: 11:38 am, August 7th, 2008 - 48 comments

Here’s Close Up from last and Mike Hosking giving John Key an absolute bollocking. Key tries to run Crosby Textor’s new lines: “dirty tricks campaign” and “entrapment”. Hosking doesn’t give him an inch. Definitely worth a watch – if you’re in a hurry fast forward to about the 2:50 mark… UPDATE: commenters have asked for […]

TV3 on the leaks from National’s conference

Written By: - Date published: 2:06 pm, August 6th, 2008 - 4 comments

Here’s the recent coverage from TV3 and political reporter Duncan Garner. On Bill English’s comments regarding the sale of Kiwibank (aired August 4, 2008): On Lockwood Smith’s hints at a secret agenda (aired August 5, 2008): [Apologies for errors in the previous videos, have re-uploaded fresh copies, AYB]

Déjà vu

Written By: - Date published: 10:58 am, August 6th, 2008 - 6 comments

If you didn’t already have enough doubts about whether to trust John Key, Bill English and Lockwood Smith by virtue of the recent revelations here’s another one to ponder. A promise to resign over future policy isn’t new territory for the Nats. Neither is failing to keep it (click image for larger version).

Multiple orgasms

Written By: - Date published: 12:31 pm, August 1st, 2008 - 28 comments

If John Key’s feeling a little nervous about repeating his “under a Labour Government I lead” gaffe at this weekend’s National Party conference, perhaps he should spare a thought for Aussie Liberal MP Jason Wood…

Controversial advertising

Written By: - Date published: 11:35 am, July 31st, 2008 - 10 comments

Stuff reports that “a British commercial for a chocolate bar featuringThe A Team star Mr T has been pulled over concerns it could cause offence to homosexuals”.  Here’s one airing locally that’s likely to cause some controversy too. It’s from a campaign by athletic gear manufacturer Skins called (perhaps tellingly) “Beyond reason”.

Freedom Week

Written By: - Date published: 6:28 pm, July 30th, 2008 - 9 comments

Amnesty International does some great campaigning and human rights work around the globe and this week is Freedom Week, their annual fundraising and awareness drive. Most people will be familiar with Amnesty’s work, especially with the spotlight they’ve helped to shine on China’s appalling human rights record in the leadup to the Olympics. What’s often […]

Nats unable to justify ACC policy

Written By: - Date published: 1:40 pm, July 18th, 2008 - 46 comments

Unlike some of our counterparts, the Standardistas aren’t into vanity posts. So, in this clip from TVNZ7’s Back Benches on Wednesday, ignore who’s asking the question and watch National’s Chris Tremain try to justify his party’s ACC policy. Reaches for his cliches but they don’t fit the question so he resorts to attacking the question. […]

The same dream

Written By: - Date published: 11:17 am, July 16th, 2008 - 5 comments

Some people don’t seem to understand that being of the Left does not mean being soley allied to Labour or the Greens or the Progressives. It means fundamentally holding beliefs that are fundamentally also held by Labour, the Greens, and the Progressives, a common thread of principles that binds the Left. 08wire.org explains with the […]

Growing opposition to Immigration Bill

Written By: - Date published: 12:07 pm, July 14th, 2008 - 13 comments

Nick Butcher has produced this excellent video opposing the Immigration Bill (which we blogged about last week and is covered in more detail here). There’s also a website and an ipetition. This really is an appalling Bill and I take my hat off to Nick and co for having the initiative to organise public opposition […]

The making of some (commercial) magic

Written By: - Date published: 8:36 pm, July 5th, 2008 - Comments Off on The making of some (commercial) magic

As usual we’ve been running the hot political stories this week but I, for one, need a breather. And what better way to relax than to watch people create an amazing scene of fluffy white stuff floating around? It’s not the snow and wintry weather that’s covering the country. This is the Making of Foam […]

California to ban cell phone use for teen drivers

Written By: - Date published: 2:02 pm, June 16th, 2008 - Comments Off on California to ban cell phone use for teen drivers

Apparently California is, on July 1, to become the 15th US state to ban cell phone use for teen drivers. In what looks like major differnce to the proposed new rules here though, unlike older drivers these younger Californians won’t even be allowed to use hands-free kits.

BBC/TVE Earth Report special: NZ

Written By: - Date published: 9:23 am, June 12th, 2008 - 15 comments

BBC and TVE screen an Earth Report special this week focussing on New Zealand’s objective to become carbon neutral: New Zealand, host for World Environment Day 2008, plans to be the first to create a completely carbon neutral economy. Their target is 2020 and they have ambitious plans to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions with […]

Video: Dr Cullen at Drinking Liberally

Written By: - Date published: 7:13 am, June 7th, 2008 - 70 comments

We just received a video of Michael Cullen’s speech to Drinking Liberally on Wednesday from one of the attendees. It’s well worth a look. Everyone who was there that I have spoken to since was hugely impressed because Cullen spoke from his roots, from his political soul. He would do well to speak like this […]

Peters refuses to answer your questions

Written By: - Date published: 12:59 pm, June 6th, 2008 - 37 comments

In the final of our ‘Interview the Leaders’ series, we asked Winston Peters three questions submitted by readers. Damian Edwards from his office promptly replied that Peters would be answering no questions from political blogs. So instead we’ve provided answers to your questions in the form of some great political songs. Q. Of which of […]

The Nats on KiwiSaver

Written By: - Date published: 11:32 am, May 28th, 2008 - 15 comments

Here’s the footage of the Nats’ accidental commitment to employer contributions under KiwiSaver. The first video is of TV3’s 6pm coverage, the second is extra footage of Mallard and Cullen discussing National’s accidental revelation.

Bloody Marys for breakfast

Written By: - Date published: 5:09 pm, May 26th, 2008 - 8 comments

Nevermind has this: “Our favourite National Party Hack unbiased political commentator weighs in on rat hygiene when the Bloody Marys it seems he had for breakfast appear to catch up with him ” Classic stuff, but enlightening too.

National still won’t say what they’d do

Written By: - Date published: 2:41 pm, May 21st, 2008 - 9 comments

Seemingly content to coast along on the “time for a change” sentiment, the National Party are still refusing to offer any substantive details in major policy areas: government debt, work rights and retirement savings. English ended up sounding like a broken record on Agenda a few days back. His stock answer was ‘I can’t tell […]

Junk pay

Written By: - Date published: 2:55 pm, May 15th, 2008 - 70 comments

The last couple of episodes of Fair Go have rightly taken aim at a distribution company – Reachmedia – that rips off young kids by paying them peanuts. Reachmedia (half owned by NZ Post) has been paying young kids sweatshop wages to distribute pamphlets for the likes of the Warehouse, Farmers, Michael Hill Jeweller, and Progressive Enterprises (the […]

Norman coming into his prime

Written By: - Date published: 7:40 am, May 9th, 2008 - 73 comments

The Greens have started to use Russell Norman as their primary spokesperson, instead of Jeanette Fitzsimons. Fitzsimons has never been great with the media, particularly in confrontational interviews and on TV. So far, Norman, while he still has much to work on, is a vast improvement. Take a look at how he handled an aggressive […]

Corporate responsibility

Written By: - Date published: 4:07 pm, May 1st, 2008 - 5 comments

Anyone remember the Pinto? Arguably not Ford’s finest hour. When in 1968 it became apparent that the Pinto’s defective fuel tank could result in the car catching fire when hit from behind, Ford executives reached for their calculators. Some quick sums (from a leaked memo) showed that the costs of fixing the Pinto were around […]

Mission Accomplished

Written By: - Date published: 11:54 am, May 1st, 2008 - 33 comments

Today is the fifth anniversary of Bush’s infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech in which he stated that “Major combat operations in Iraq have ended”. To mark the date Moveon.org have released the following ad, intended to remind the public that as McCain himself said, “no one has supported President Bush on Iraq more” than he has. […]

Helen Clark on BBC’s “Hardtalk”

Written By: - Date published: 7:43 pm, April 5th, 2008 - 17 comments

Sarah Montague from BBC’s Hardtalk interviews Helen Clark – starting with a question about whether the time might be right for a New Zealand referendum on republicanism. I’ve got to admit that I found it thoroughly refreshing to watch an interview where the interviewer doesn’t pull punches but also isn’t competing to be the centre […]
