The Politics of Impartiality

Written By: - Date published: 2:59 pm, November 23rd, 2010 - 41 comments

I’ve never been one for censuring cogent voices from the wilderness when they carry far enough on the wind to reach our ears because the wilderness can hold treasure troves of intelligent dissent. Today I came across a neat illustrative example of a ham fisted attempt to consign a voice from the left to the wilderness in the name of…well, it’s called fairness or some such.  Apparently.

Spirit Level author on Q+A

Written By: - Date published: 6:05 am, November 21st, 2010 - 11 comments

The Spirit Level is the book that the loony right of politics loves to hate.  Today, Sunday morning political analysis show Q+A features Emeritus Professor Richard Wilkinson, co-author of The Spirit Level (9am on One).  Should be an interesting programme…

An understanding of class

Written By: - Date published: 9:20 am, October 17th, 2010 - 52 comments

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mYY1QGK0jQ Here’s John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett in the classic “An Understanding of Class”, a lovely commentary on one of the pillars of capitalism. Since the abandonment of class rhetoric by Labour a few decades ago, we no longer have a lot of class consciousness in New Zealand. Which is a bit ironic […]

Are we going to get a Breakfast that looks like New Zealand?

Written By: - Date published: 11:00 am, October 11th, 2010 - 24 comments

Last time I saw Breakfast I saw it was overwhelmingly pakeha, middle-class, and blonde.

Just wondering, now that Henry’s gone, if we’re going to get a Breakfast that looks like real New Zealand.

Next time, could we have a PM that looks and sounds a bit more like a PM?

Written By: - Date published: 8:40 am, October 11th, 2010 - 37 comments

Here’s John Key this morning on Breakfast, talking about Paul Henry’s resignation. Naturally he’s eager to downplay the influence of Kiwi-Indian business and diplomatic interests, and to deny any government involvement in the decision. The most revealing part of the interview is when Key stammers: “I have not spoke [sic] to Paul Henry” Key says […]

Paul Henry: Gone

Written By: - Date published: 6:06 pm, October 10th, 2010 - 117 comments

TVNZ have announced the resignation of Paul Henry. John Key’s going to have a LOT of angry rednecks on his case over this one. First Andy Haden, now Paul Henry. And then of course there are all the civilized people already on Key’s back about his gutless failure to protest Henry’s racism in the first place.

Paul Henry’s jokes about women, deaf people and infant deaths, proudly brought to you by TVNZ

Written By: - Date published: 7:15 am, October 9th, 2010 - 59 comments

Here’s a compilation from TV7’s Russell Brown from April this year, highlighting the value for money taxpayers get from paying Breakfast Bigot Paul Henry $300,000+ per year: ridiculing the appearance of guests whose opinions he disagrees with, ridiculing deaf people, women, and the disproportionate rate of infant deaths in developing countries – “but they’ve got […]

Paul Henry case now a diplomatic incident

Written By: - Date published: 12:52 am, October 8th, 2010 - 147 comments

Paul Henry’s racism on state funded television has now reached the level of a full fledged diplomatic incident.  The New Zealand High Commission in India has issued a press release apologising and stating that Henry’s views do not represent “the New Zealand Government or people”.  Fine words, but they need to be followed up with appropriate action.  Henry has to go.

Fire Paul Henry activism update, Boycott TVNZ Advertisers campaign gearing up

Written By: - Date published: 8:05 pm, October 7th, 2010 - 41 comments

India’s External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has summoned the New Zealand High Commissioner in New Delhi to please explain Paul Henry’s ultra-racist outburt against Minister Sheila Dikshit, on New Zealand’s state broadcaster TVNZ. The Minister may also like to ask why Prime Minister John Key giggled in response Henry’s racist attack against our Governor General […]

Yet more of Paul Henry’s racism, proudly brought to you by TVNZ

Written By: - Date published: 6:28 am, October 7th, 2010 - 52 comments

More anti-Indian racism from Paul Henry… and Paul Henry being racist about hispanics (you can tune out through the middle, but listen to the first and last few minutes) We’re paying this guy $300,000+ a year for this. This is what TVNZ condones in continuing to employ Henry, despite it going against TVNZ and BSA standards. It’s typcial […]

Analysing Henry’s ‘apology’, TVNZ & Key’s mishandling

Written By: - Date published: 2:38 pm, October 6th, 2010 - 56 comments

We’ve had a lot of coverage of the issue of TVNZ’s bigoted host but I want to chip in with a few points: Paul Henry’s ‘apology’ is in fact a calculated dog whistle to bigots, the blame for Henry goes to a deeper rot in TVNZ, and we have seen prove positive of John Key’s complete inability to lead and stand up for what’s right.

Paul Henry Asks Questions of Government

Written By: - Date published: 11:38 am, October 6th, 2010 - 22 comments

What future for TVNZ? Paul Henry’s words show us their current car-crash course – bigotry for ratings, price over quality, drivel over culture.  Isn’t it time we asked for something better?

Paul Henry: “It’s so appropriate coz she’s Indian”

Written By: - Date published: 7:24 am, October 6th, 2010 - 50 comments

In case you were wondering why Breakfast Bigot Paul Henry has to go – here’s another great example of his work. Watch it all if you can. Maybe this alone wouldn’t be enough for dismissal if it was an uncharacteristic rarity, but it’s characteristic and commonplace for Paul Henry. I don’t want this person representing my […]

NZ’s new racist international image, proudly brought to you by TVNZ

Written By: - Date published: 7:50 am, October 5th, 2010 - 82 comments

Here’s some of the international coverage of New Zealand that Paul Henry’s racist outburst against our Governor General Anand Satyanand has sparked. In India and here. Cool, after the recent effigy burnings of a certain Kiwi in New Delhi  on the grounds that he was racist, that should really help things heaps. Australia, UK, USA, […]

Paul Henry: we all pay for his unending bigotry

Written By: - Date published: 11:40 am, October 4th, 2010 - 195 comments

New Zealand’s most infamous anti-Ambassador Paul Henry has shamed us all once again. On TVNZ’s Breakfast this morning, Henry asked John Key (at 6’30” into the interview) of our Governor General “Is he even a New Zealander” (Satyanand was born in NZ) and could the next GG be someone who “looks and sounds a bit […]

Extremist NZ Actors Equity demands outrageous fortune

Written By: - Date published: 8:24 am, October 3rd, 2010 - 17 comments

Wondering who Actors’ Equity are and what they do? Well here’s a video from AE explaining just that. Actors’ Equity also have a good website that lays out their position in Peter Jackson’s Das Hobbitski fiasco. It’s been funny watching the msm contort itself while struggling with its rarely conflicting predilections for both celebrities and […]

One of these things is not like the other XII

One of these things is not like the other, One of these things is not quite the same. Can you guess which one is not like the other, Can you tell me before I finish the game?

I’d phone a friend but they’re all Young Nats too

Halfcaste interviews a selection of Young Nats at their recent conference. Interviewer: “What’s your favourite tribe?” Young Nat: “To be honest I don’t have a favourite Maori tribe” Interviewer: “Top three?” Young Nat: “Ahh… I don’t think I know…” Interviewer: “Don’t know any Maori tribes?” Young Nat: “Noooo… No, hang on, Maori tribes… no sorry…” […]

A well-earned punishment

Written By: - Date published: 9:30 am, June 18th, 2010 - 44 comments

Speaker Lockwood Smith has removed 22 free carparks at Parliament from TV One and TV3 as punishment for their disgraceful behaviour in chasing Chris Carter around the House the other day. Good. There are a few, non-onerous, rules about where and when the media can go and take its cameras. They completely ignored those rules for the sake of tabloid journalism.

You can’t drink shit

Written By: - Date published: 7:15 am, June 11th, 2010 - 25 comments

On Wednesday night John key was in Christchurch. He was met by protesters, angry at the abolition of democracy in Canterbury, and the plans of the newly installed dictatorship to allow over-farming to poison the water and kill the rivers. How did TV news handle the coverage? I think it’s fair to say that it was up to their usual standards…

Send a JAFA to Wellington….

Written By: - Date published: 9:52 pm, April 26th, 2010 - 12 comments

To paraphrase Muldoon – send a JAFA to Wellington, and we can only increase the average intelligence of both parts of the country. Needless to say, TV news chose to focus on a minor story in Goffs speech. If a future mayor of Auckland, Brown, can sit at the cabinet table on decisions related to […]

McVicar interview misses mark

Written By: - Date published: 4:08 pm, April 12th, 2010 - 54 comments

Sensible Sentencing Trust’s Garth McVicar made a rare appearance on Russell Brown’s Media 7 the other night, demonstrating yet again what a charlatan he is. Brown had a chance to ask some good questions but let the opportunity slip away.

Fox News – driven by conservative bullshit

Written By: - Date published: 4:00 pm, April 11th, 2010 - 24 comments

Rachel Maddow has a look at exactly how much Fox News just makes stuff up and calls it news. It uses selectively edited stories like the ACORN ‘pimp’ story, the ‘climategate’ e-mails, and many other highly inaccurate ‘stories’, and promotes them for ratings.

In effect Fox News is the (un)official spin channel for conservative activists to peddle garbage entertainment on. Have a watch of Rachael as she tears the facade of conservative story telling apart.

Garner coy on accusations

Written By: - Date published: 11:55 am, April 11th, 2010 - 29 comments

The day after Zet’s post here on homophobic, imbalanced reporting by TV3’s Duncan Garner, Brian Edward’s wrote a scathing detailed deconstruction of Garner‘s repeatedly vicious coverage of Chris Carter. Edwards suggests Garner’s repeated attacks resemble a personal harassment campaign, a view Dim Post agrees with saying Garner’s obsession with Chris Carter has wandered into dark and […]

World Cup TV fiasco

Written By: - Date published: 8:58 am, March 4th, 2010 - 18 comments

How’s this for insanity: the finals in the World Cup will be broadcast live on four free to air channels as well as Sky. That’s pretty much the definition of overkill and it has got to have cost a bomb, thanks to the Government’s disastrous handling of the issue.

Woman’s Day pays creep to stalk Mau

Written By: - Date published: 7:00 am, February 16th, 2010 - 58 comments

Tabloid trash mag Woman’s Day has being paying someone to follow Alison Mau and her family to take pictures to fuel their prurient interest in her personal life, according to a statement by Mau on TVNZ’s Breakfast. In her statement Mau pleaded for Woman’s Day Editor Sarah Henry to “call off the dogs” and the “creepy guy in […]

Bomber’s War on News

Written By: - Date published: 2:03 pm, November 4th, 2009 - 9 comments

If you didn’t take my last hint to keep watching this, here’s your chance to catch up. I think it’s genuinely good. It’s like TV, only true.

Bomber’s War on News

Written By: - Date published: 12:05 pm, September 29th, 2009 - 5 comments

If you haven’t been able to see it yet or can’t get Triangle/Stratos, here’s a link to recent episodes of Bomber Bradbury’s War on News. It’s entertaining, accurate and educational all at once. Kind of like PBS only a bit more ‘informal’. It’s also pretty funny in parts and Bomber comes across as genuine and […]

Junk pay

Written By: - Date published: 2:55 pm, May 15th, 2008 - 70 comments

The last couple of episodes of Fair Go have rightly taken aim at a distribution company – Reachmedia – that rips off young kids by paying them peanuts. Reachmedia (half owned by NZ Post) has been paying young kids sweatshop wages to distribute pamphlets for the likes of the Warehouse, Farmers, Michael Hill Jeweller, and Progressive Enterprises (the […]

TVNZ and the Nats

Written By: - Date published: 5:05 pm, May 13th, 2008 - 36 comments

As Paul Henry continues his party political broadcasts for the National Party on Breakfast TV, a curious coincidence of timing occured on Sunday. John Key devoted part of his speech to a National regional conference to the Nats plans on how to deal with “P”. The rest of the speech was pretty much a repeat of the one he […]
