Climate Change and Us

Written By: - Date published: 4:02 pm, March 21st, 2017 - 4 comments

3 major environmental reports today – the OECD says our economy is beyond environmental limits; a cross party group of MPs sponsor research into the way to net zero emissions; and the World Meteorological Organisation has a stark look at continued climate change.

People’s Commission on Public Broadcasting and Media

Written By: - Date published: 3:00 pm, March 21st, 2017 - 5 comments

Is having a strong, independent media an essential part of a functioning democracy? What is the role of the ‘Fourth Estate’ in today’s world? Are the media doing a good job of keeping citizens informed?
People’s Commission has its final workshops in Auckland, and how to submit online

Nothing to fear, nothing to hide

Todd Barclay has chosen to co-operate fully with the police investigation into his actions by getting a lawyer and refusing to say anything to them.

Unpopular PM

Written By: - Date published: 2:04 pm, March 21st, 2017 - 46 comments

Bill English has premiered at 25% in TV3’s preferred PM poll. Even incumbency can’t make Bill look popular.

Living Economies Expo

Written By: - Date published: 11:02 am, March 21st, 2017 - 2 comments

“Imagine a country which respects the living planet; whose people enjoy fair land tenure, good housing, good health, wholesome food, a rewarding livelihood, free education, a compassionate justice system, and an adequate income: a country with an inclusive democracy grounded in vibrant communities.”

Classy

Written By: - Date published: 10:15 am, March 21st, 2017 - 24 comments

National’s ill advised attacks on Jacinda Ardern have shriveled in the sunlight, leaving only their reliably suggestible lunatic fringe / Mathew Hooton. The more they rant, the classier she looks.

National’s water problem

Written By: - Date published: 8:03 am, March 21st, 2017 - 48 comments

The Government’s timid backdown on water charging is placing it in a very uncomfortable position.

“Dumbing down a generation”

Written By: - Date published: 7:02 am, March 21st, 2017 - 137 comments

An excellent piece by Simon Collins in the weekend Herald. NZ’s educational scores in international comparisons are locked in a downward spiral. National’s ideology has failed, while we ignore successful models.

Nat branch chair calls for “corporal punishment”

Written By: - Date published: 6:27 am, March 21st, 2017 - 38 comments

Bill English should have spoken out to dissociate his party from Price’s archaic views. Why hasn’t he?

NRT: “Too hard”

Written By: - Date published: 2:05 pm, March 20th, 2017 - 54 comments

No Right Turn: “The real barrier to National … acting on this is because that “no-one owns water, first come, first served” policy disproportionately benefits one group and allows them to profiteer from a public resource while destroying its value to others. That group is farmers – and they donate to the National Party.”

What are we America now?

Written By: - Date published: 10:24 am, March 20th, 2017 - 58 comments

Last night ONE News had an important exclusive on Syrian-born Kiwis who say they are being subjected to “intrusive and unnecessary searches” at our border, including demands to pass over social media passwords. This needs an investigation, and if some officers are crossing the line, it needs to be dealt with quickly.

Fix our tax law!

Written By: - Date published: 7:02 am, March 20th, 2017 - 128 comments

Multinationals exploit our tax laws to pay no tax in NZ. Matt Nippert has been doing great work on this, and his latest this weekend on Apple is a powerful example. Planned changes to our laws don’t go far enough. We need to fix this. What’s the downside? What’s the delay?

Yes indeed.

Nats’ attack on Ardern – Day 3

Written By: - Date published: 9:51 am, March 18th, 2017 - 68 comments

They were still digging themselves deeper yesterday. The latest attack tells us more about National than it does about Ardern.

Reducing substance abuse – what actually works

Written By: - Date published: 8:25 am, March 18th, 2017 - 66 comments

If, instead of macho posturing (like the “War on P”), we wanted to actually tackle substance abuse, we would be looking at what actually works. Interesting case study in Iceland.
