The trouble with hate speech

Written By: - Date published: 1:02 pm, March 16th, 2019 - 319 comments

Yesterday’s terrorist attack which has resulted in 49 kiwis losing their lives highlights issues brought up by the tour of New Zealand by Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux and the debate about if hate speech should ever be tolerated.

Just outlaw semi-automatic weapons

Written By: - Date published: 10:54 am, March 16th, 2019 - 213 comments

I’ve used and worked with weapons for large chunks of my life. They’re not there for dickheads. There aren’t any reasons to keep operational semi-automatic weapons in civilian life. Just outlaw them. The conviction for unlawful possession of them requires mandatory imprisonment.

It’s the morning after the horrific attacks in Christchurch. 49 are dead, many more injured. The PM is flying to the city, having announced our gun laws are to be immediately strengthened. The country is reeling, but the fascists are bound to lose.

Christchurch Mosque Shooting

Written By: - Date published: 2:39 pm, March 15th, 2019 - 362 comments

There has been a shooting at a mosque in Central Christchurch. Injured people have been seen in the doorway and armed Police are out in force.

UPDATE: The Star is reporting that one person is dead, and there are reports of a second mosque in Linwood being attacked.

UPDATE: A shooter has posted a series of manifestos. It appears to be typical race hate. It also appears that the shooting was live streamed.

UPDATE: The WestPac rescue helicopter is flying over Papanui High School, with what appears to be armed Police leaning out the doors. Papanui is approx 5 kms from the Dean’s Ave mosque. There are also reports that an arrest has been made.

UPDATE: Police confirm an arrest has been made. However the city remains in lockdown until it is clear that there is no further danger. Police also confirm multiple fatalities.

Last UPDATE for the night: 49 dead, 48 injured, 4 fascists in custody. Today has been horrible and tomorrow is going to be a very hard day. Kia kaha, aroha and lets stick together. A people united will never be defeated.

The right to strike for their future

Written By: - Date published: 2:49 pm, March 8th, 2019 - 25 comments

Good editorial in the DomPost today supporting the students’ strike for their future environment. I can’t say the same for David Farrar on National radio yesterday opining they should strike at the weekend. For another lesson in patronising, watch Senator Dianne Feinstein’s treatment of the kids in California.

The tax debate – Dogwhistle time

Young people and climate change

School students are planning national protests against climate change on March 15, 2019. The response of some politicians to this news is less than optimal.

Thanks a million Ruth

Ruth Dyson, in my opinion up in the top rank of great Labour women, has announced she will leave Parliament at the end of this term. Typically in advance and typically without fanfare. Her contribution to Labour and to the less fortunate in our country has been huge.

The Gun Club 2

Christchurch police have been ordered to carry guns until a wanted man is arrested. Is this a dry run for the permanent arming of our cops?

Cameron Slater slithers into bankruptcy

Written By: - Date published: 7:15 am, February 27th, 2019 - 51 comments

Yesterday Cameron Slater announced that he would be seeking bankruptcy. It is unlikely to help him to avoid the stress of dealing with the legal consequences. The three current defamation cases that he is defending so badly have very little to do with money and a lot to do with making sure neither he nor any other arsehole dares to use his vile tactics again.

‘Taxpayers union’ – too ‘stupid’ to understand tax?

Written By: - Date published: 9:30 am, February 26th, 2019 - 59 comments

There is a classic piece of waffle in the NZ Herald about when capital gains tax will apply to the family home. But the conditions when this applies are extremely simple and obvious. However professed experts on taxation like the so-called ‘taxpayers union’ can’t understand them. Probably because they are paid not to.

Can we have a future, with capitalism?

Written By: - Date published: 8:50 am, February 25th, 2019 - 192 comments

The concentration of wealth and power insufficiently regulated capitalism has caused, now works against the survival of human civilisation. With the wealthy opposing any attempts to limit the damage which affects their wealth.

Spare a thought for our poor impoverished landlords

Spare a thought for poor landlords who are aghast at the thought that they should have to share capital gains on properties they have purchased with no intent of making a capital gain.

IBM has staged a debate between an IBM computer and the world debating champion. The human won but the debate suggests that it may be just a matter of time … and the computer had remarkable things to say about poverty.

Walls and Bridges

It’s been a horror week for two leaders and a leader who will never be leader.

TRP casts a wary and weary eye over three political zombies whose time appears up.

And, oh, Jeremy Corbyn.
